I have been hunting around for the best gifts for older kids, since my daughter is 9 years old. This is a tough age group. I know in the case of my daughter, she's not a teen and she's not a little girl anymore. If you are wondering what to give your 9-12 year old this year...maybe this fun list will inspire you.

Top Gifts for 9-12 Year Olds

Books, books, and more books

best book lists for kids

Comics or chapter books? Classic or New Release? Fiction or Non-Fiction? Mystery or Humour? What motivates your child to read? Whatever it might be, embrace your child's reading interests. It might not be what you would choose for yourself, but if it gets them reading and learning, then that's all that really matters. I have created an EPIC book list post that you can check out, but here are a few great choices...

"Neil Flambe and the Crusader's Curse" by Kevin Sylvester - The full series is filled with fun adventures with Chef Neil Flambe. Fun for boys and girls to read.

"The Hobbit" by J.R.R. Tolkien - I love the illustrated version of this classic book. It's a great way to get kids excited about reading a long book.

"The Reluctant Journal of Henry K. Larson" by Susin Nielsen - This book tackles some tough subject matter in a very open and positive way. A great book for mature readers.

"National Geographic Kids Almanac 2026" by National Geographic - Every year National Geographic puts out a new Almanac that is packed with great information, bright images and easy to read text that is totally engaging for older kids.

Wrist warmers

I want both of these for myself! Arm warmers or wristlets are perfect for older kids. They can still access their devices, while keeping warm and cozy. I love this DIY tutorial from Purl Soho. Make your own or find a pair at a local shop.

T-shirts

3 t-shirts various colors

Everyone loves a new t-shirt. Whether you search out a cool vintage concert tee or a t-shirt with a funny message, you are sure to find a t-shirt the tween in your life with wear with pride.

Board Games

board games and playing pieces in a pile on table

Chess, Chinese Checkers, Scrabble, Battleship, Clue, and Monopoly are all classic board games that never go out of style. Kids love these games and there are so many fun updated versions available - like Harry Potter Monopoly, Dungeons and Dragons Clue, and a Super Mario Chess Set.

Bracelet Making Kit

pile of friendship bracelets

This ultimate friendship bracelet-making kit brings back memories from my childhood. Alex Toys "Friends 4 Ever Bracelet Making Kit". Or, gather up some beads and make your own cool friendship bracelets using our simple method.

Sewing Kit

Depending on your child's skill level, the Alex Toys "My First Sewing Kit" is a great introduction to sewing. This kit has been around for years because it truly is the perfect starter kit. It has everything you need to get started with simple sewing projects. And, if your child is more skilled, then a sewing box filled with supplies (needles, thread, pins, buttons, a pattern, and fabric) would make a lovely gift.

Art Supplies

Every older kid needs an amazing art supply kit. This case is filled with art supplies - paints, crayons, colored pencils, markers, and even a sketch pad. Most arts and crafts stores have similar versions of this kit.

Boogie Board LCD Writing Tablet

This is the modern whiteboard alternative, the Boogie Board LCD Writing Tablet  by Kent Displays. Kids can endlessly draw, write, erase, and draw some more on their Boogie Board. The absolute best for long road trips.

Jewelry

How lovely are these simple silver rings that can be found on Etsy. Etsy is filled with beautiful jewelry for kids of all ages. Boys can have some jewelry too. These leather bracelets are wrapped in a quotation that you can personalize just for your young man. There are so many amazing artists selling their work in one spot.

Artwork or Poster

Children, no matter what their age, should be surrounded by art. Seek out your child's passion and see where it leads you. My daughter loves musicals...so singin in the rain would be perfect for her. I know that my husband...and any young man...would enjoy this limited edition Indiana Jones poster from Monster Gallery via Blue Dog Posters website. What does you child love?

Now it is time to check out all the other great blogs taking part in the HUGE Holiday Gift Guide.
