What is zentangle?
Okay, what is a zentangle? Originally I thought that a zentangle was just doodling…I was wrong. The zentangle method is a trademarked process based on a theory developed by founders Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas. You have undoubtedly seen this patterning art form before, it has become incredibly popular. “ZEN” means calm and “TANGLE” means a collection of overlapping patterns. ZENTANGLE is the bringing together of the calm and the pattern. It was originally based on using a 3 ½ inch square of heavy stock paper and a black fine marker and various patterns that turn into a creative piece of art. We didn’t follow the exact Zentangle method, but we had a lot of fun experimenting.

Start by printing the zentangle Christmas gift tags on white cardstock. I have designed 3 different designs - blank Christmas trees, Christmas ornaments, and Christmas gift boxes. I find that white cardstock is best because the gift tags will be sturdy and the paper is smooth and great for doodling on. While you can use regular printer paper, you may find that the lines you draw with your markers will bleed and smudge.
Once you have the empty gift tags printed, it is time to get creative. This is when I like to put on my favorite Christmas playlist and have fun. There is something relaxing about doing zentangle art while listening to music. You can take inspiration from our collection of easy zentangle patterns and our easy Christmas zentangle patterns. I have shared a wide variety of simple zentangle patterns and designs. Or, just put your pen to paper and see what zentangle patterns you can come up with.
Now, traditionally for our zentangle art, we only use an ultra-fine tipped black marker, but for these festive gift tags, I pulled out the classic Christmas red, green, and even blue. Just be sure the markers and pens you choose are ultra-fine tipped.
When your designs are complete, it is time to cut out the tags and slip a loop of your favorite ribbon through them to attach to your gifts.
We had so much fun creating these gift tags. These creative DIY gift tags are a beautiful addition to any gift you give. Let the kids do the drawing and these gift tags will be cherished by grandparents family and friends. They could even be kept and used as little bookmarks after the gifts have been opened.
