Top Gifts for Older Kids (aged 9-12)

By Jen

top gifts for older kids

Wondering what the top gifts for older kids are? Would you love to find them all in one place? You've come to the right place. Today we are taking part in a mega blog event...The Huge Holiday Family Gift Guide. We've teamed up with a great group of bloggers who are all putting together their top gift guides. I have been hunting around for the best gifts for older kids, since my daughter is 9 years old. This is a tough age group. I know in the case of my daughter, she's not a teen and she's not a little girl anymore. If you are wondering what to give your 9-12 year old this year...maybe this fun list will inspire you.

1. Books, books and more books

Comics or chapter books? Classic or New Release? Fiction or Non-Fiction? Mystery or Humour? What motivates your child to read? Whatever it might be, embrace you child's reading interests. It might not be what you would choose for yourself, but if it gets them reading and learning then that's all that really matters. Some great choices include...

"Neil Flambe and the Crusader's Curse" by Kevin Sylvester
"The Hobbit" by J.R.R. Tolkien
"The Reluctant Journal of Henry K. Larson" by Susin Nielsen
"National Geographic Kids Almanac 2013" by National Geographic

2. Wristlets & T-shirt

I want both of these for myself! These wristlets or Recycled Sweater Children's Arm Warmers made by Gaye Naismith are gorgeous. The Tree Stump and Bicycle t-shirt, by Dark Cycle Clothing, is perfect for a boy, or girl.

3. Board Games

Chess, Chinese Checkers, Scrabble, Battleship, Clue and Monopoly are all classic board games that really never go out of style. Kids love these games.
4. Bracelet Making Kit & Marker Spray Paint Kit

This ultimate friendship bracelet making kit brings back memories from my childhood. Alex Toys "Friends 4 Ever Bracelet Making Kit". Any boy would be happy turning their markers into sprayable paint with Crayola's Marker Air Brush Set.
5. iPod
It is hard to believe it, but the iPod Shuffle is quickly becoming a "classic." If your kids love music, then this is a must for under the tree.
6. Sewing Kit
Depending on your child's skill level the Alex Toys "My First Sewing Kit" is a great introduction to sewing. If your child is more skilled then a sewing boxed filled with supplies (needles, thread, pins, buttons, a pattern and fabric) would make a lovely gift.
7. Art Supplies
This awesome kit, from Deserres, filled with art supplies would make a great gift for any kid. Add some paper or a sketch book and your young artist can create anything they like. Most arts and crafts store have similar versions of this kit.
8. Boogie Board LCD Writing Tablet
This one is a hot item this Christmas. The modern day white board alternative, the Boogie Board LCD Writing Tablet  by Kent Displays.

9. Jewelry

How lovely are these simple silver rings from Deanne Watson, on Etsy. Etsy is filled with beautiful jewelry for kids of all ages. Boys can have some jewelry too. These leather bracelets are wrapped in a quotation that you can personalize just for your young man. Created by Poppy Drop.

10. Artwork/Poster

Children, no matter what their age, should be surrounded by art. Seek out your child's passion and see where it leads you. Elloh is an incredible artist and she makes delightful limited edition artwork inspired by modern culture. My daughter loves musicals...so singin in the rain would be perfect for her. I know that my husband...and any young man...would enjoy this limited edition Indiana Jones poster from Monster Gallery. What does you child love?
