You know that I love making a wreath and in particular I love a fluffy pompom wreath. I've made a number of creative DIY wreath projects over the years - Valentine's Day pompom wreath, a lovely fall pompom wreath a bright Christmas wreath, and a few other pompom craft projects. This time around I wanted to make a versatile white pompom wreath that I could easily transform into 3 different Christmas pompom wreath styles! You're gonna love this creative Christmas craft project.

While I usually make my pompom wreaths using small and medium-sized pompoms, this wreath has great big pompoms too. The addition of the large pompoms makes this one extra fluffy...like big snowballs.
White Christmas Pom Pom Wreath - 3 different ways
pompom maker tool
skein of white yarn
pink yarn, blue yarn, green yarn
sharp scissors
12" foam wreath form
white ribbon, red ribbon
felt sheets - pink, green and blue
glue gun
bobby pins (hairpins)
How to make a pompom
I've shared a video and a post where I give the full instructions for using the pompom making tool to make pompoms. If you've never made a pompom before, this is a great place to start. You will want to make at least 14 white pompoms in 3 sizes - 1 ⅜", 3 ⅜", and 2 ½".
I like using a rounded green foam wreath form for the pompom wreaths I make. For this wreath, you will want to cover the green of the wreath form by wrapping it with white yarn. Add a dollop of hot glue to the wreath form and press the end of the yarn into the glue, securing it to the wreath. Now wrap the white yarn around and around and around the form. Add a dollop of glue about halfway around the wreath for a little extra security. And, another dollop of glue when you reach the end.
Now you have a yarn wrapped wreath form and a pile of white pompoms. Time to make the white pompom wreath. Squeeze a patch of hot glue to the wreath form and press a pompom into the glue. Press for a few seconds, to be sure it is secure. Once you have your first pompom in place add more and more pompoms around the wreath. The key is to add them in a scattered pattern, kind of like a brick pattern. Add large and medium pompoms. And, use the small pompoms to fill in any gaps or spaces. I like adding the smaller pompoms around the inner edge and the outer edge.
The pompoms don't need to wrap around the back of the wreath. They only need to cover the sides. So that when the wreath is hanging you see pompoms and it lays flat on the wall or door.
When you've filled in the pompom, as you like, it's time to add a loop of ribbon. I found this cute white pompom ribbon, but you could use any white ribbon. I think a white velvet ribbon would be quite nice for this project. Again, add a big dollop of hot glue at the "top" of the wreath - you decide what you would like to consider the top of the wreath. Loop and press the ribbon into the glue. I will be hanging my wreath on a hook that we have on our front door. So, I was able to measure how long my ribbon loop needed to be, so the wreath didn't block our peephole and knocker. Take into consideration how and where you are hanging your wreath when you make your ribbon loop.
This is the first version of the Christmas white pompom wreath. A fluffy, white pompom wreath that is perfectly lovely. But, let's kick it up a notch.
The second white pompom wreath is super simple. Wrap a festive ribbon around the white pompom wreath. I used a fun red and white mini-pompom ribbon. I love the bold red with all the white of the wreath. My top tip for adding things to a pompom wreath is to use bobby pins (hairpins) to attach items to the wreath. Instead of securing things with glue...which cannot be easily removed...using hair pins means everything can be moved around.
So, secure the ribbon in place with hairpins, tucked into the backside of the wreath.
Up next white pompoms version will bring even more Christmas fun to the wreath! I'm a big fan of bright and cheerful colors at Christmas, so when I wanted to add some color to this white wreath I reached for my fave pink, blue, and green yarn.
Using the smallest pompom maker tool, I made some small pompoms, that kinda look like little Christmas ornaments.
Simply feed a hairpin into each little colorful pompom...
...and then tuck them into the larger white pom poms on the wreath. How cute is this version?!
Finally, I wanted to add a colorful holiday message to welcome my holiday visitors. Using sheets of pink, green, and blue felt and matching yarn. I cut out the message "Happy Holidays" from the sheets of felt.
Then cut lengths of the color-coordinated yarn to join the letters together and make the little felt banner. I used a glue gun to adhere the letters to the lengths of yarn.
Again, I used hair pins to secure the yarn of the festive banner to the wreath. By simply tucking the ends into the back of the wreath. I love how this version of the wreath turned out. I'm thinking about adding a "Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow" banner for the winter. Because nothing is glued to the original white pompom wreath, it will be easy to change things up over the years to come.
How to clean a pompom wreath
While you cannot use soap and water to clean a pompom wreath you can do things to keep them clean and lasting year after year. Blow a hair dryer over your pompom wreath - on the cool setting, if possible. The hair dryer will blow out any dust that might have built up in the wreath. Better to keep the dryer on a low setting, as you don't want to unravel the yarn in the pompoms.
How to store a pompom wreath
When I remove my pompom wreaths I am careful to store them in a way that won't crush the pompoms. I have a few hooks set up in my craft room/storage room. I hang all my pompom wreaths to store them. Alternatively, you could purchase wreath storage bags for your wreaths. These have hard sides and will stop any crushing of the pompoms and keep the dust out.
