I'm so in love with this pompom wreath! I've made many pompom crafts over the years and I've shared many Valentine's Day craft projects. But, this Valentine pompom wreath is now officially one of my all-time favourites DIY wreath ideas I've had.
Why do I love this wreath so much? Look at how cheerful and bright it is. I popped it on our front door on a dark winter morning and it instantly brightened my day. Every time I walk up to the door, it brings a smile to my face. Not to mention it is super easy to make. Yes, it's gonna take some time to make all of the pompoms, but it's so worth it.
How to Make a Valentine Pom Pom Wreath
4 skeins of yarn - I used a combination of Impeccable acrylic yarn and Craft Smart acrylic yarn
- Craft Smart Bo Peep (multi-colored yarn)
- Craft Smart Coral yarn
- Impeccable Arbor Rose yarn
- Red Heart Super Saver Yarn Petal Pink
pom-pom maker 1 ⅝" pom poms
sewing scissors
12-inch foam wreath form (I used green, but you could use white)
hot glue gun
coral rick rack
Not surprisingly, the first step in making this wreath is making a big pile of pom poms. I use the Clover pom pom maker. It is easy to use and is inexpensive. It is very important that you use a pair of sharp scissors. I have a pair of scissors that I only use for sewing projects. I tied a piece of ribbon around the handle so that everyone in the house knew they are my sewing scissors. A sharp pair of scissors is going to make this much easier for you.
The pom pom maker comes with instructions, but here is my basic run-through of how to use the tool. Start by wrapping the yarn, tightly around one side of the semi-circle...don't cut the yarn. Then close that side and continue wrapping the yarn around the second side. You want to wrap on as much yarn as possible for fluffy pom poms. Once it's all wrapped up, use the scissors to cut the yarn, down the middle of the circle. Keep it closed, don't let it open up.
Now, feed a 6-inch length of yarn around the circle, through the center channel, where you cut with the scissors. Tie a tight knot. Then open up the pom pom maker and trim the pom pom. You will probably want to make a few practice pom poms to achieve the fluffiness that you like,
Okay, you will need to make around 15 pom poms in each color...yep, that's 60 pom poms for one wreath. This number is approximate as you might like a fuller wreath than I made. It's up to you.
So, make all of the pom poms. I pop on a podcast or binge a show and in no time at all, I've made the pom poms. Get the kids to help too. They can totally make some pom poms.
Once you have your pile of pom poms it's time to build the wreath. Heat up the glue gun and start gluing the pom poms to the wreath. Distribute a wide patch of glue on the wreath. Press the pom pom into the glue. Be sure to press down the edges of the pom poms, you want the pom pom secured all the way to the edges of the yarn. Then start adding more pom poms in a random colour pattern.
I place the pom poms on the front half of the wreath - not all the way around the wreath. This way your wreath will hang nicely on your door. If you wrap them all the way around the wreath will bulge off the door when it hangs.
As you add more and more pom poms it is important to step back from the wreath and take a look at the colour distributions and the placement of the pom poms. You want it to look random - not all lined up in a row.
When you've made your way around the wreath and you're happy with how it looks it's time to attach the loop to hang it up. Place the wreath on the door where you want to hang it and measure the distance from the wreath to the hook, so you know how long your loop needs to be.
I like to use rick rack or ribbon, in a coordinating color. Measure and cut your length of rick rack and use a big blog of hot glue to secure the loop in place.
That's it, your Valentine's Day pom pom wreath is done. Hang it on your door to welcome your guests all February long...I might leave mine up until spring arrives...that's when I pull out my spring egg carton wreath.
This pom pom wreath would look just as lovely inside the house. It would make a beautiful addition to a bedroom or any room in the house. Once you make one pom pom wreath I bet you will start building more and more...just like me!
