Simple DIY Fall Felt Leaf Garland

By Jen

It's time to get a little bit crafty...fall crafty. There is something about the fall that makes me feel like creating new things. I'm not sure what it is, but I can't resist pulling out my needle and thread in the fall.  We love sharing all kinds of fun things to do in the fall. This time we are going to make a lovely fall felt leaf garland. fall felt leaf garland feature image

Every season we create a different garland to hang on our dining room and kitchen windows. In the spring and summer, I have a flower garland and in the winter I have a garland with little evergreen trees. And, you can't forget about our fun Halloween pumpkin garland and our cute pompom garlands. I have been missing a fall garland. While out walking our dog the other day I was inspired by the leaves I saw floating down from the sky.

fall leaves There is a tree around the corner from our house that is always the first tree to lose its leaves. They turn lovely shades of red, orange and yellow. The other day I brought home a few of the leaves, pulled out the felt, created a fall leaf template and set to work.

You can choose to use all 3 or use one style. Alternately, you could simply take inspiration from the fallen leaves where you live and make a totally different leaf. Draw the leaf, or print it out and then cut it out of paper. Pin that paper template to the felt and cut out a big pile of leaves...in all the colours of fall. printable fall leaf template

Once you have the leaves cut out it is time to arrange the leaves in a pattern. My daughter spent a lot of time playing with creating patterns. This activity tied in with the math unit she was working on at school. She could make patterns all day long. leaf pattern
Once you have a pattern that you like, it is time to start sewing. I loved using the rik rak because it almost looks like a branch for the leaves. You could just as easily sew the leaves onto a strip of ribbon. It only takes a few straight stitches to attach the leaves to the rik rak.

I love how it looks mixed in with our gourds. I'm sure I'll hang it in the window another day..but for today, it lives on our dining room table.
