Toilet Paper Roll Shamrock for St. Patrick's Day

By Jen

We love a simple toilet paper roll craft and this toilet roll shamrock is the perfect St. Patrick's Day craft for kids of all ages to make. While we have made plenty of egg carton flower crafts, this is our first toilet paper roll plant craft and I think I really love how it turned out. Fun for kids from kindergarten and older.

How to Make a Toilet Paper Roll Shamrock

craft supplies needed

toilet paper rolls
scissors
green paint
paintbrush
green pipe cleaner
green pompom
glue gun

The first step is to cut the toilet paper roll into 3 pieces. Each toilet paper roll will make 3 leaves. I've written about this before, but my top tip for crafting with toilet paper rolls is to remove them from the washroom as soon as they are emptied. I have a box in my craft room where I store all of my toilet paper rolls and empty egg carton containers, ready to craft with at a moment's notice. Use a set of sharp scissors to cut the roll in 3 sections.

Once you've cut the toilet paper roll into thirds it is time to make the clover leaves. Start by pinching one end in, creating a pointed end. On the opposite end, you will poke in the round end of the clover leaf. You are essentially making a toilet paper roll heart shape. Repeat this with all of the pieces of roll that you have.

When all the clover leaves are made, it's time to use the green paint to turn them into leaves. Paint the inside and outside of the rolls. I ended up completing two coats of paint on each piece. Don't worry if they start to lose their heart shape, it will come back when you make the clover. Set them aside to dry.

Once the paint has dried it's time to assemble the shamrocks. Now, shamrocks usually have 3 leaves, but we also love to find a lucky four-leaf clover. That's why we've made both. Start by gluing two "leaves" together, by running a bead of hot glue along the side of the leaf. If you are making a 3-leaf shamrock glue all 3 leaves together and then glue a piece of pipe cleaner between the leaves. As you assemble the clover reshape each leaf to have its heart shape.

Fold about half an inch back at the end of the pipe cleaner and press the folded piece into a bead of glue that will tuck the pipe cleaner between the leaves, creating the stem of the plant. When working on a four leaf clover you will want to attach the stem to the cluster of three leaves, right before you attach the fourth leaf.

When all the shamrocks have their stems attached add a little green pompom to the middle of the shamrock. This pompom covers the area where the leaves all meet up and makes the shamrock look tidier.

Once the pompom is glued in place the toilet roll shamrocks are complete. You can make a bouquet of shamrocks for St. Patrick's Day. I put ours all along our dining room table at our St. Patrick's Day party. This is a cute St. Patrick's Day craft that kids of all ages can make.
