Outdoor Play Party – How to Make a Snowy Rainbow

Last summer the girls and I had a great time making rainbows out of rocks down at the beach. Searching for different coloured rocks was a lot of fun. With the winter weather…and a little bit of snow…we were inspired to make a winter rainbow. I love incorporating science and learning in play. We brought the red, blue and yellow food colouring bottles out of the pantry and into the front yard.
I had the girls make 7 snowballs each, and line them up. Then we created a rainbow using the three food colouring colours. The girls had to tell me what the colours of the rainbow were.
We combined the colours to complete the rainbow.
My favourite colour was green…the yellow, blue and ultimately green snowball, looked so pretty.
I then extended the learning by asking my daughters which of the three primary colours they thought we used most often to create the rainbow. They guessed blue. After writing down all the different colour combinations they came to the conclusion that they were correct!
I was so excited to see some great experimenting and learning going on at the last Outdoor Play Party.

How The Sun Rose had fun catching snowflakes and closely examining the snowflakes structure.

Toddlers Through Preschool answered the question, which melts faster…snow, iceicles or ice cubes?
And, The Educators’ Spin on It went outside exploring and made some fabulous winter observations.

Love this Jen – we have painted the snow with powder paint but never made rainbow snowballs. We finally have some snow tonight so hopefully we’ll still have it on Monday to enjoy! Kierna

Fun! If we get any snow this year, we’ll have to do this. Or maybe we’ll just make our own in the blender.

What a super idea. I’ve been doing a similar thing with my boys and icecubes but squirting colours on to snow sounds great too.

How fun! I love rainbows! What a nice way to brighten up the snow and learn about color mixing at the same time!

A very pretty snowscape. We coloured some indoor snow, unfortunately my son wanted to colour mix and we got brown sludge, I like your rainbow better!
