What is zentangle?
Okay, what is a zentangle? Originally, I thought that a zentangle was just doodling…I was wrong. The zentangle method is a trademarked process based on a theory developed by founders Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas. You have undoubtedly seen this patterning art form before, it has become incredibly popular. “ZEN” means calm, and “TANGLE” means a collection of overlapping patterns. ZENTANGLE is the bringing together of the calm and the pattern. It was originally based on using a 3 ½ inch square of heavy stock paper and a black fine marker and various patterns that turn into a creative piece of art. We didn’t follow the exact Zentangle method, but we had a lot of fun experimenting.

The first thing to do is to print our pumpkin zentangle template. I always print my zentangle templates on cardstock. I like cardstock because it is a heavier weight of paper, thicker than regular printer paper. I also like it because it is smooth, which is great for drawing lines with the fine-tipped pens. But if you only have regular printer paper, then go for it. Use whatever you have on hand.
Once you have printed the pumpkin, you have a couple of options. You can simply use this as a pumpkin coloring page. Spend a little time coloring this pumpkin. Or, you can try creating a zentangle pattern pumpkin.
Fall Zentangle Patterns

For my pumpkin, I filled each section with a different pattern. The first section I filled with a simple pattern of falling leaves. Normally, I only use black to draw my zentangle art, but this time I decided to embrace the fall theme and went with fall colors, and I love how it looks. So, I used orange for the leaf zentangle pattern.
Next, I used a large sunflower zentangle pattern. The center of the sunflowers is filled with circles. The petals are radiating pointy triangle-like shapes. I then filled in the negative space with the same red pen. Filling in the negative space allows the flowers to really pop.

Next, I used a radiating curved line zentangle pattern. I have used this pattern in most of my zentangle art. I think it's my favorite pattern. It is easy and repetitive and results in a fun wavy pattern.
I filled the last large section of the pumpkin with a scale-like zentangle pattern. This pattern reminded me of the top of an acorn. Have you ever looked at the beautiful scale pattern on the top of an acorn? I thought this was the perfect fall pattern.
Then I filled the other sections of the pumpkin with various simple zentangle patterns - dots, stars, circles, and webs. Finally, I finished by coloring the acorns and mushrooms along the bottom of the page and the leaves at the top.
I have created a printable step-by-step guide to drawing 4 fall zentangle patterns. I show you how to draw the fall leaf pattern, the sunflower pattern, an acorn zentangle pattern, and a pumpkin zentangle pattern. These are super easy doodle designs to learn and use to fill up your pumpkin printable.

Tips for making zentangle art
My top tip for starting any zentangle art project is to set aside some time and a space to be creative. Zentangle is sort of meditative. It is calming to sit and draw repetitive patterns and designs. So, set aside some time and play your favorite fall playlist. I find music helps me with my creativity. Gather your supplies, your pens, and your printables and spend a little time doodling. Go with whatever you want. Take inspiration from the things you see in your room or in nature. There are no "wrong" patterns. Have fun being creative.
