What is Zentangle?
Okay, what is a zentangle? Originally I thought that a zentangle was just doodling…I was wrong. The zentangle method is a trademarked process based on a theory developed by founders Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas. You have undoubtedly seen this patterning art form before, it has become incredibly popular. “ZEN” means calm and “TANGLE” means a collection of overlapping patterns. ZENTANGLE is the bringing together of the calm and the pattern. It was originally based on using a 3 ½ inch square of heavy stock paper and a black fine marker and various patterns that turn into a creative piece of art. We didn’t follow the exact Zentangle method, but we had a lot of fun experimenting.
Now that we have a clearer understanding of what a zentangle is it's time to have some fun. While my zentangle designs are usually simple free-flowing patterns sometimes I like to take inspiration from the time of year or a holiday. I find it fun to move beyond the small square and try zentangling inside other shapes - which is why I've created these Easter themed zentangle templates. And, if I'm doodling inside fun holiday shapes, I might as well be creating Easter zentangle patterns too!

First, I've shared 3 different empty templates for you to doodle inside. There is a large Easter egg, an Easter Bunny head, and an Easter basket. Print these on white cardstock so that the markers you use will glide smoothly across the surface. Lower weight, all-purpose printer paper won't work for this. You really need to use cardstock or the markers will bleed into the paper and won't be able to slide along the surface of the paper when you are doodling.
Once you have the templates printed you can have fun filling them in. Begin by drawing a single, tangled line across and around the shape. Let's work with the Easter egg template. Fill the empty spaces you have created with zentangle patterns and designs. Go ahead and check out all the easy zentangle patterns we've shared or try out some of our new Easter ones.
Easter Zentangle Patterns
Next, I've created a collection of Easter eggs filled with easy zentangle patterns to try. Check out all of the different ways I've filled these Easter eggs. Some of these patterns are Easter patterns - like the Easter bunny zentangle pattern. Or, the Easter egg that is filled with more Easter eggs! I also filled one egg with a classic basketweave design. And, the Easter egg bunting was fun to create. And, of course, these Easter eggs all celebrate the spring season! They were so much fun to draw.
Feel free to print the Easter eggs zentangle patterns and see if you can make your own designs that are inspired by the ones I've shared here. I like to set aside some time to draw. I find a quiet spot, gather up my markers and my paper. I love to put on a relaxing playlist and start to draw. This is what I love about zentangle art, it is almost meditative. You put pen to paper and escape into the doodle designs you create.
Share these Easter templates with the students in your classroom, and your kids at home, or use them yourself. When they are done you can cut them out and create a zentangle Easter bunting or use gift them to family. I know ours will become part of the Easter decorations we pull out year after year.
Have fun creating your Easter zentangle art and sharing it however you like!
