A few years ago I designed the coffee cup sleeve template and started making sleeves. This version is the easiest to make, as you will use felt to make it. The two layers of felt are thick enough to protect your hands from the hot coffee in the cup. Using felt also means that kids of all ages can make this Mother's Day craft. Felt is easy to cut and sew and the finished product is always crisp and clean looking.
Mother's Day Coffee Cup Sleeve Craft
our coffee cup sleeve template
1 sheet of blue felt and 1 sheet of pink felt
thread and embroidery thread
sharp scissors
sewing needle and embroidery needle
Begin by printing our coffee cup sleeve template. Once printed you need to cut it out and pin it to your sheet of felt. Cut on the outer edge of the line. You need 2 sleeves cut from the main felt fabric. I chose to use a fun bright pink for this cozy.
Now it's time to cut out the words you want to sew on the sleeve. It's important to know that when you wrap the sleeve it will be with the pieces arching downward and there will be some overlap. A short word is best. I placed the template on the blue felt and cut out the shape. I then cut ¼ inch off each side of the felt and proceeded to cut the letters MOM from this piece. This way I knew the letters would fit inside the sleeve. Place the letters on the pink sleeve to be sure the letters will fit.
When you have the letters cut out it is time to sew them in place. * Again, the arch of the sleeve fabric needs to be arching down at the ends, otherwise the letters will be upside down. Look at the image to fully understand what I mean. Use regular thread and a basic blanket stitch to adhere the letters to the sleeve. Make sure to only sew them to one piece of the pink sleeve fabric. This will hide all the sewing inside when to attach the second piece of felt.
Once the letters are sewn in place, it is time to assemble the sleeve. Start by using embroidery thread, with a blanket stitch all the way around the edge, to attach the two pieces together. I used a color of thread that would stand out, but you could use a color that blends in, have fun with your color choices.
Now, it's time to overlap and close the sleeve. The overlap should be about a ¼ inch. Pin the overlap in place and use a coordinating thread to stitch around the overlap, securing the sleeve closed. If you happen to have a cup, you can test the size on your cup before sewing it in place.
The cup will be snug. I have found it is best to start with a snug cup sleeve and over time the felt will relax and stretch. We made the "Pop" sleeve 5 years ago and it has loosened up with use and washing, but it still fits the cups.
That's it the Mother's Day coffee cozy is ready to be gifted and used by mom. I like to gift mine with a Starbucks cup or there are also these cute reusable cups from Amazon. You could even include a gift card or a pack of your mom's favorite tea or coffee. She is going to cherish this gift for years to come.
Does this coffee cup sleeve fit Starbucks coffee cups?
Yes, I specifically designed this template to fit comfortably around Starbucks coffee cups.
Is this coffee cup sleeve washable?
The answer will depend on the fabric you choose to use. If you choose to use felt, like I did, then yes it is washable. Simply wash it in the kitchen sink, along with your dishes. A little dish soap and it will be ready to dry overnight and use it again and again. If you choose to make a cozy using cotton (or other fabrics) be sure to pre-wash the fabric before making the sleeve and then follow the washing instructions for the fabric.
