Letterbox and shoe box

By Jen

Mother's day was about getting outside...letterboxing! I've been wanting to try this ever since I heard of this. Wondering what it is? Well, if you have heard of geocaching, then you are getting close. Letterboxing is a treasure hunt - without a GPS...geocaching is a treasure hunt - with a GPS. Someone, at sometime, has hidden something in your neighbourhood. Go to letterboxing.org or geocaching.com and find out where to start your search.

We just plugged in our postal code and off we went.

Followed the clues. Our clever clues included "march 18 steps on the dirt path to the right" and "look in the small cave." It really is a fun little mystery to solve. Awesomeness!!
What I love about letterboxing is that when you find the "treasure" it includes a stamp.

A stamp that you are supposed to press into your log book. In our case, there was a stamp and a little booklet with the names of the people who had found the treasure before us. Amazing that people have been searching and finding this box since 2009. My daughter's really enjoyed this adventure. We are planning a trip to Algonquin Park this summer, and will be doing more letterboxing at the park. I also found a selection of letterboxes in High Park and other areas of our city...sounds like a fun outing for this summer!
As for the shoe box. My obsession with all things Marimekko continues. My husband discovered that the good people at Marimekko teamed up with Converse to make a few shoes! Match made in heaven.

There is something about the richness of the colours, the simplicity of the design and the tradition of Marimekko that draws me in. Marimekko is a design house from Finland, that has been around since 1951. During the US presidential campaign in 1960's, Jacqueline Kennedy wore several Marimekko dresses. The versatile and timeless fabric designs are on anything from dishes, clothing to furniture. You are probably most familiar with the poppy design...actually titled Unikko.

However, their work is so much more. If you are looking for a source for Marimekko fabrics in Toronto check out The Finnish Place. Their collection is quite vast. For me, I now need to decide...green, white or black laces??
