Tips for Planning an Eco-Friendly Wedding Event

By Jen

My husband and I were married many, many years ago. Back in the day when being "green" really was an alternative lifestyle. We tried to incorporate a handmade vibe...potted plant centrepieces, potted herb bonbonniere and handmade invitations. Nowadays it is possible to have an environmentally conscious wedding event. Even the Royal couple are making plans to be more aware of the environment. Here are 5 easy and beautiful ways to care for the planet and your guests. Be sure to check out all of our amazing Green Living Ideas for Families.

Tips for Planning an Eco-Friendly Wedding

The wedding cake

Kate and William's wedding cake was made from ingredients that are both organic and fair trade. While this may seem quite pricy...considering they hosted 650 guests...the cost doesn't need to be that high for your event. Organic ingredients are so readily available, that making this choice is easy and affordable. Many bakeries are choosing to use organic, fair trade and local (when possible) ingredients. You can even have a vegan, kosher or gluten-free treat made! Amazing.

In lieu of gifts options

In lieu of gifts, the Royal couple asked guests to make a donation to their favourite environmental charities. A friend of mine did this as well, so it's not only for royalty to consider. This is another simple idea to adapt. Consider Greenpeace, WWF or your local community charities...what a wonderful way to give back! If you are looking for gifts why not take the opportunity to register for eco-conscious items. Home accessories like organic bedding, items that use recycled materials and vintage pieces are all excellent choices.

Choose your wedding location wisely

By hosting the ceremony and the reception in one location you not only make your wedding convenient but also make it eco-friendly. Happily, your guests don't need to hop in their cars and travel to a second location. Less driving equals fewer emissions! Unless you have a horse-drawn carriage...then...whatever!

Consider the paperwork

A wedding uses a lot of paper products...it's actually quite surprising. From the invite, place cards, menus to the r.s.v.p and the maps. Every piece adds up. Even if you creating and printing your invitations there are more eco-friendly options available to you. So, whenever you can turn to recycled papers. Recycled papers are available in all shapes, colours and sizes. Many printers offer this eco-option.

What's in your bouquet?

When choosing the flowers for the Royal wedding, it was rumoured that the choices would be primarily flowers that honour the UK...local is best. This is easily relatable to the average wedding. By simply choosing native, local and seasonal plants you can save money and have a stunning bouquet. What time of year are you being married? Spring flowers in the spring, winter flowers in the winter and think how glorious a fall bouquet would be!

These simple steps can lower the environmental impact of your wedding day. Actually, these steps can be applied to any special occasion. It would appear that the Royal couple is considering the environment in the planning of their wedding. Did you have any interesting tips for planning an eco-friendly event? Cheers!
