I have created many, many different editions of would you rather questions for kids over the years. I've got sets for most holidays and seasons. But, the one I was missing was an Earth day edition. So, this year I have pulled together this extra special Earth Day activity for kids. (Be sure to check out all of our fun, printable Earth Day activities for kids).
I would say that in general, my would you rather questions are fun and a little silly. So, when I sat down to pull together this Earth Day version I was surprised by how hard it was to come up with funny or silly questions. For me, the environmental issues our world is facing aren't very funny. You know what I mean.
Every "this or that" I was coming up with felt tragic. The options to stop climate change and to save our planet are getting more and more difficult. That's when I realized that this set of questions was going to be different. It was going to be extra special.
Yes, these are fun questions (they aren't all doom and gloom) but they are a little more thought-provoking. Sure you can skim through and simply ask and answer each question...but you can also use each slip of paper as a jumping-off point into some serious learning.
Earth Day Would You Rather Questions for Kids
First of all, print the (newly updated) Earth Day Would You Rather Questions for Kids. Once you have it printed off, it's time to cut out each question and decide how you're going to use them. We like playing this game around the dinner table or pulling out the questions on long road trips. I know plenty of teachers who use these questions in their classrooms, to spark conversations and debates.
As I said, this set is extra special. This set poses questions that need a little more analysis and research. With each question, I challenge you to think about a couple of things:
- why was this question included in an Earth Day activity?
- what does this question have to do with the environment?
- what communities are impacted most by the situations in the question?
Here are some examples of the would you rather questions being asked...
- Would you rather be a scientist on the International Space Station or a scientist in the Aquarius Reef Base?
Okay, what does this question have to do with the environment and Earth Day? Perhaps you could do a little research about the environmental science projects taking place on the ISS and what the scientists are doing in the Aquarius Reef Base. What will you discover to help you make your decision?
- Would you rather plant 200 trees or 200 acres of crops in a field?
Again, what does this question have to do with Earth Day? What communities do you think these ideas impact? What kind of trees and what kind of crops? Time for some investigating before answering this one.
As you can see, this particular set of questions can be answered quickly or be looked at much more deeply. I suppose it's up to you and the kids. You might be surprised by all the knowledge your kids already have and the opinions they share.
I love this set of Earth Day Would You Rather Questions for Kids. I truly hope it provokes some amazing conversations about our beautiful planet and inspires folks to think about the little decisions we make every day and the impact they have on our home, Earth.

Laura says
There is a spelling error on the Would you rather questions -- desert, not dessert (although I think I might enjoy living on a dessert!)
Thank you so much for these!
