DIY Santa Pom Pom Wreath

Well, I do so love a cute Santa Claus craft. And, I love creating a seasonal wreath for our front door. This year I wanted to make a Santa Claus wreath and wasn't sure what to make. Then I remembered how great my other pom pom wreaths have been and decided to make a red Santa pom pom wreath! And, I love it.

I knew I would need to use a whole lot of red pom poms and then that got me thinking about Santa's signature red suit. And, of course, his gold buckled black belt. So, I pulled together everything I needed to bring this Santa Claus pom pom wreath to life.

DIY Santa Pom Pom Wreath

The first step in making this wreath is to make a pile of red pom poms. I always use my favorite pom pom making tool - in this case, I used the 2 ½" diameter tool and the 1 ¾" diameter tool. The number of pom poms you need will depend on the size of the wreath form you choose to use. In my case, I used a green 10-inch form. I like using the green forms for my wreaths. I like the feel of it compared to the white ones. You wouldn't want to make the wreath much smaller than this, or there won't be enough room for the belt. Remember the addition of the pom poms is going to shrink the hole in the middle of the wreath.

Once you have a pile of pom poms, it's time to use the hot glue gun to adhere them to the wreath form. Start with the larger pom poms. Add a large dollop of glue to the wreath and then use your fingers to press the pom pom into the glue. Hold the pom pom in place for a few seconds, so it has time to really stick. Then move on to the next large pom pom. Work your way around the wreath, staggering the large pom poms. Then use the small pom poms to fill in any spots where you can see the wreath form.

I like to keep the pom poms to the front and the sides of the wreath form, so the wreath will lay flat on the door or wall. Just be sure to check the sides of the wreath and fill in any holes with the smaller pom poms.

Once the pom pom wreath is covered it is time to make Santa's belt. 3-inch length of the black felt. 3 inches seemed to be a good width for Santa's belt. I didn't want to make it too thin, Santa wears a substantial belt.

To make the buckle, cut a square of gold felt that is approximately 4 ½" x 4 ½". Lay the square on the table and place the black felt belt over the gold square. Use a black marker to trace the top and bottom edge of the belt onto the gold felt. Draw a similar line down the sides of the square of gold felt. Then fold the square, with the lines showing. Cut along the lines. Remove the center and you have a belt buckle.

Glue the belt buckle to the center of the black felt belt. My black felt was a little too short, it wouldn't stretch around the sides of the wreath. So, I had to use the glue gun to add a couple of extra lengths of black felt to the ends of the belt.

Now that the belt is done, center the belt buckle in the center of the wreath, wrap the belt around the wreath, and glue the ends in place. Trim the excess felt.

Add a dollop of glue to the top-backside of the wreath. This is where you will hang the wreath from. Poke a loop of ribbon into the glue - securing it in place. I always hang my wreaths in the same spot and I know the exact length of the loop that I need. If you are unsure you can take our wreath to the spot where you are going to hang it and measure.
