DIY Argyle Hearts Wreath for Valentine's Day

By Jen

Diy argyle heart wreath with pink hearts and grey yarn

You know that I love a good DIY wreath project. It is rare for our door to have nothing hanging on it. While I have shared many Valentine's Day crafts over the years I knew there was room for one more creative Valentine's Day wreath. The argyle heart pattern on this wreath is so fun and it hangs perfectly in our living room!

I first came across this argyle heart wreath many, many years ago. When I went back to find the tutorial I discovered that the link I had was broken...the original post was lost. So, I decided that I wanted to figure out how to make an argyle heart wreath and share it with everyone. It's such a fun wreath to make for Valentine's Day, but I'm going to share another place I think this wreath would hang perfectly.

How to Make an Argyle Hearts Wreath

12-inch foam wreath form
Impeccable acrylic yarn - pale grey
2 shades of pink felt
scissors
approximately 2 -inch heart cookie cutter
hot glue gun

wreath form wrapped in grey yarn

The first step in making this wreath is wrapping the entire foam wreath form with the grey yarn. Start by placing a large dollop of hot glue on the "back" of the wreath. Press the end of the yarn into the glue, securing the yarn in place. Then start wrapping around and around and around the wreath. You want to keep the yarn tightly wrapped and the wraps close together. I added a dollop of glue every few inches...just for added security. When you get all the way around the wreath, again secure the end of the yarn with a dollop of glue.

pile of pink felt hearts and paper heart templates

Now it's time to make all of the hearts. Start by tracing your 2" heart cookie cutter onto a piece of paper. This paper heart will be the template you use for the felt hearts. Be sure to test the size of your hearts on your wreath. 2" inch wide hearts should be perfect. Pin the paper templates to the sheet of felt. Use the scissors to cut out 12 hearts - 6 in each color. I chose light pink and dark pink. You could totally choose a pink and white felt or red...whatever color combination you like best.

Time for more glue. Secure the hearts to the wreath with a small dollop of glue, in the middle of each heart. You don't need to glue all over the back of the hearts, because they will also be secured by the yarn you are going to wrap over them. Alternate the color of the hearts and the direction they are facing. You can decide on the spacing you like best. I placed mine about 1 inch apart.

With the hearts secured in place, it's time to do the final wrap of yarn. Secure a piece of yarn at the same spot where you started to wrap your wreath originally. I like having all the heavy gluing in one spot. Now wrap, in a diagonal, across the first heart to the right of where you have started. Continue wrapping in a diagonal across the next heart. With your fingers secure the yarn in place and gently flip the wreath over. Now you will add a small dollop of glue over the yarn you just wrapped. This will secure the placement of the yarn. A small dot of glue is all you need. Diagonally wrap the next 2 hearts and then stop to secure them. Repeat all the way around the wreath. When you make it all the way around, glue the yarn in place and trim the yarn.

Okay, now you will diagonally wrap the hearts in the opposite direction. This will complete the argyle effect. Again secure the yarn after every 2 hearts you wrap.

Now it is time to add the loop of ribbon to hang the wreath from. Again, secure the two ends of the ribbon with hot glue. If you know where you want to hang the wreath, measure how long the loop of ribbon will need to be to hang nicely. Secure the ribbon and ta-da! You have a super cute argyle heart wreath!

This wreath is perfect for Valentine's Day, but I also think it would make a lovely addition to a baby's nursery. What a beautiful gift to make for a new little one. In fact, I could totally see making this argyle wreath using different colours of felt. Imagine green and blue hearts or yellow and orange. So many possibilities.
