When Toddler Approved selected Jan Brett's "The Easter Egg" for the virtual book club and blog hop I was excited. We really enjoy Brett's books. On Christmas Eve our family reads her version of "The Night Before Christmas." When I told my daughters about the book selection, my daughters rhymed off a list of Jan Brett's books; The Mitten, The Three Snow Bears, Home for Christmas and The Hat. They were excited too!
"The Easter Egg" is a lovely story about a rabbit, Hoppi, who wants to create a perfect egg for the Easter Rabbit. We follow along and see Hoppi learn what all the other rabbits are making for the Easter Rabbit. The rabbit then helps a robin whose egg has fallen from the nest. I won't give away the ending...let's just say that the rabbit makes the Easter Rabbit very proud.
After reading the book I realized that I actually own a few eggs that resemble some of the eggs from the book. My grandmother is an incredible folk artist. She hasn't painted in many years, but when she did she created some beautiful pieces. I happen to have a set of wooden eggs and a chicken that she painted. I pulled them out and showed my girls. They immediately called the eggs "story eggs", in that the pictures painted on the eggs tell a story. With that, I knew how I could expand our experience with this book.
My youngest daughter used two of my grandmother's eggs as inspiration for two short stories. Complete with pictures.
The last few weeks my youngest daughter has embraced writing books and stories. It's quite incredible. This book and activity provided her with another opporutnity to be inspired. This has been a fantastic way to kick off our Easter crafting, thanks Toddler Approved. Awesome creative writing activity to tie into the book. How lucky you are to have such beautiful eggs with such meaning because they were created by your grandmother. Thank you for sharing!

Your grandmother's art work is beautiful and what a lovely activity to link the creativity of different generations.
