During the summer we (my daughters) built fairy houses for our garden containers.
As the weather is taking its annual turn toward winter my girls have been wondering about their little fairy friends. Much like the birds, my eldest daughter theorizes, the summer fairies fly south for the winter. However, that does not mean that we live in a fairyless world. Nope, enter the winter fairies.
Thanks to Cecily Mary Barker's book we now know the wonders of the winter fairies. My girls each selected a couple of fairies that they hope to house this winter. Not surprising, they both picked the Christmas tree fairy and the holly fairy.
Now, what does a winter fairy garden need? The girls decided that a winter fairy would need a solid structure to live in and shelter. We used empty yogurt containers, with small doors cut into them...small so that they keep the cold out.
Next, the garden needs lots of clippings from our Christmas tree, a Balsam Fir. And finally, the gardens needed some festive decorations.
As a bonus we placed our fairy garden containers under our front porch bench and draped some Christmas lights over them. We think they look pretty spectacular.
Here's hoping that any winter fairies that are flitting around our garden will take shelter in our tiny houses. This was a wonderful lesson in preparing for the cold weather, learning about the plants that remain in our gardens over the winter and an opportunity to do some research at the library. A great combination of learning and creating.
