I love decorating the table for our big Easter dinner. Our family always gathers at our house for a delicious potluck dinner and the table decorating starts days ahead. The girls and I have fun making the most cheerful and colorful Easter crafts. This year I wanted to make our own little Easter baskets, one to set at each place. Then I had the idea to use one of my favorite craft supplies - toilet paper rolls.

How to Make Toilet Paper Roll Easter Baskets

supplies to make toilet roll Easter baskets - paper, marker, scissors, pompoms

Craft supplies needed:

toilet paper rolls
colorful cardstock paper
ruler
glue gun
white pipe cleaners
colorful pompoms
scissors
black marker

toilet paper roll with lines drawn on to cut and making the bottom of the basket

To begin, you need to transform a toilet paper roll into a basket. Press the toilet paper roll flat and draw a line, about 1 ½ inches long from the bottom of the roll toward the middle. Then press the roll in half again, and draw two more lines. Cut along these lines. You will now have created 4 flaps on your roll.

To make the box end fold one flap inward, then add a dollop of glue to this flap and fold and press the next flap into the glue. Carry on gluing all four flaps into a flat bottom for your basket. Make as many toilet paper roll baskets as you need. We made one for each family member.

Next up, we will cover the baskets in colorful cardstock. You will need to measure how tall your basket is and this will determine the height of the piece of cardstock you will need. In general, a 6 ½-inch length of cardstock will wrap easily around the basket. So, our pieces of card stock were 2 ½ inches X 6 ½ inches. I chose yellow for the chick baskets, blue for the bunny basket, and coral for the Easter basket. You will also need to cut a basket handle from the same paper. We cut our handle 3 inches long.

Once all the pieces are cut it's time to use the glue gun to adhere the card stock in place. Start at the "back" of the basket with a line of glue, press the cardstock in place. Then wrap the cardstock around the basket and again use a line of glue to adhere it in place. I opted to keep the cardstock rounded, but if you prefer you could press the corners and make a square basket. It's up to you. Then glue tuck and glue the basket handle in place.

Baby Chick Easter Basket

For the chick toilet roll basket, you will need some yellow card stock cut into little wings. I simply cut a long oval from the yellow paper. I then cut the oval in half and that created two wings. Fold over the flat edge and use the glue gun to attach the wings to the sides of the bird.

I then cut a little triangle of orange paper and glued it in place - the chick's little beak. The final step is adding the little eyes. You could use googly eyes, but I decided to go with simple eyes drawn on with a black marker.

Easter Bunny Easter Basket

For the Easter Bunny toilet roll basket, you will need to make a set of bunny ears. For the ears, I cut two ears from the blue paper and two inner ears from the pink paper. I then used a thin line of glue to adhere them together. Once glued together, I used the glue gun to then attach them to the inside of the basket.

Cut 3 lengths of the white pipe cleaner, about 2 ½ inches long. Twist the pipe cleaners together. Add a dollop of hot glue to the spot where you want the bunny nose to be and then press the twisted pipe cleaners in place. Add another little dot of hot glue and press a pompom nose onto the pipe cleaners. You now have a cute bunny nose. Finish by adding a cute smile and eyes with the black marker.

Traditional Little Easter Basket

Finally, I created a simple, traditional Easter basket. This one is super easy and you could change it up however you like. I chose a coordinating color paper and cut a 6 ½ inch length which I cut a zigzag edge into. Glue the paper and wrap it around. This basket is easy and done.

Now that your cute paper roll baskets are made, it's time to fill them with Easter grass and little chocolate treats. Place one at each table setting and they are sure to be a hit with guests.

Tip for Crafting with Toilet Paper Rolls

My top tip for crafting with toilet paper rolls is to collect your toilet paper rolls as soon as the roll is empty. Take the empty rolls into the craft room and store them there until we are ready to make a craft. I have a bin in my craft room where I store all of my toilet paper rolls and egg cartons. Of course, if you don't have any empty toilet paper rolls you can purchase paper rolls from the craft store.
