The Cow Loves Cookies Scavenger Hunt

By Jen

the cow loves cookies scavenger huntTime for the Virtual Book Club for Kids and this month we are exploring the books from author Karma Wilson. While at the library we sat and read many Karma Wilson books. She has written many, many classic children's picture books. "The Cow Loves Cookies" was the one that brought the biggest smiles to our faces. There is something about a cow sharing milk and cookies with a farmer that is just too funny. So, when we were done reading the book I asked my daughters if it inspired a game or activity? Yep, my youngest daughter gave me all the instructions we needed to have our own The Cow Loves Cookies Scavenger Hunt.

The Cow Loves Cookies Scavenger Hunt

The object of the game is to hide the food and treats from the animals, then go and search for the food and match it to the farm animal. First of all, I spent some time tracing the illustrations of the farm animals and their food. I never seem to have tracing paper when I need it...but, I always have parchment paper. Parchment paper is a quick and easy substitute for tracing paper. tracing animals

Next, my daughter and I cut out each illustration and used a glue gun to adhere them to sheets of construction paper. Once glued to the construction paper, my daughter cut out each shape and write the name of each food item and animal on the back. Then the shapes were sturdy, labelled and ready to be hidden. animals cut out and words

I had my daughter go to her bedroom for 2 minutes, while I hid all the food items around our living and dining room. Then, the hunt was on. As she found each item, she brought them over to the animals and matched them to the animal who likes to eat the food. Of course, the cow gets the cookies! animals with food

This was a really fun and simple game to play. I love kid created games that support reading, writing and learning. Now, let's take a look at what book and activity all the other Virtual Book Club for Kids have read and created. Be sure to visit all the participating blogs. If you have a post to share that features a Karma Wilson book, please link it up below. Or, you can pop over to the Virtual Book Club for Kids Facebook page and share your story there.
