A Sustainable Christmas – The Christmas Sweater

The holidays are filled with fun traditions. Our holiday is no different. I have a particular tradition that started many, many years ago. Every year, in late November, or early December, I go on a hunt for a holiday sweater. Yep, I purchase a new sweater that I will wear throughout the holiday season. Sometimes the sweater is fun and festive and other times it is more utilitarian – no, it is not an “ugly Christmas sweater”. My holiday sweater becomes a part of my holiday wardrobe. When my daughters came along the hunt began for their own holiday sweaters. After all they needed a cute sweater to wear when they visited with Santa? Well, now I have a pair of tweens and we all look forward to the annual sweater expedition. As you know, we are always looking for ways to have a more eco-friendly Christmas, a more sustainable Christmas and thus, we decided to change up our Christmas sweater tradition this year.  A more sustainable Christmas - Our annual Christmas sweater hunt turns a little more sustainable this year.

This year, we skipped the shopping malls and hopped online. Style Crush is an online store stocked with previously loved high end clothing at a discounted price. Shopping at Style Crush means we save the time associated with driving to a mall, searching for a parking spot, we save the money we probably would have spent on things we didn’t actually need and wasting all that energy. The added bonus – we are giving perfectly lovely clothing a second life.  sustainable christmas style crush

The online shopping experience was so much fun. My daughters and I gathered around the computer, hemming and hawing about which sweater we thought would look best. Style Crush carries clothing and accessories for girls size 7/8 up to adult women. My girls picked out a complete outfit each, an additional sweater and my eldest couldn’t resist a TNA handbag. Of course, I found the perfect Christmas sweater…I actually let my tweens pick out my sweater…I’m a brave mom.style crush tween outfit

Why shop second hand? Purchasing previously loved clothing has a positive impact on the environment. By giving clothing a second life, we are keeping clothing out of the landfill and cutting down on the manufacturing demands. Our society often makes consumers feel that clothing is disposable. However, when you shop for quality clothing and accessories they can actually last for years. Online sites, like Style Crush, provide consumers with an eco-conscious, fashionable and economical alternative.style crush package

Our sweaters arrived in the mail (Style Crush offers flat rate shipping rates) and you would have thought it was Christmas morning. My girls were so excited to open the package…I was excited too. It was time to unveil our Christmas sweaters. Everything fit beautifully. We were happy to wear our new outfits on a festive trip downtown for an evening out enjoying dinner and live theatre. I know that our Christmas sweaters are going to be happily worn all holiday season long. style crush
