Every year, when we head to the Toronto Santa Claus parade I make a batch of cookies to bring along for the kids. I usually make cute holiday shaped sugar cookies. This year I decided to experiment a little. I had so much fun making rainbow cookies, and you know I love coming up with awesome Christmas cookies to bake with the kids...I had a feeling I could make a fun variation for Christmastime. So, I took my inspiration from Christmas ball decorations and made these simple, festive Christmas cookies.

Now, at first glance, you might think these Christmas cookies will be complicated to make, but they aren't. The cookie dough is a basic sugar cookie dough. And, the technique requires a couple of extra steps, but the steps aren't complicated. In the end, you will bake Christmas ornament cookies that are impressive, and only you will know how easy they were to make!

Simple Christmas Ornament Sugar Cookies

1 cup room temperature butter
¾ cup granulated sugar
½ teaspoon salt
2 large eggs yolks, room temperature
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
red and green gel food colouring
toothpicks
parchment paper
plastic wrap

First, make the cookie dough. Beat the beat butter, sugar, and salt until light and fluffy. Beat in an electric mixer or in a large bowl.

Next, add the egg yolks, one at a time, scraping the bowl after each addition. Stir in the vanilla.

Turn the mixer to low and add the four. Mix it up until the dough forms combined.

After making the dough, I then divided it in half and coloured each half pink and green. (I love the combination of pink and green at Christmas). Wrap each half of the dough, tightly, in plastic wrap and place the dough in the fridge for at least 1 hour.

Remove the dough from the fridge and divide each half into thirds. Roll out 2 of the thirds of the green dough and create a snake of dough with the third piece.

Pretty, festive, and delicious. Unfortunately, I made them too far in advance of the parade...there weren't very many left. Just enough for the kids to enjoy. Looks like I'm going to have to make another batch! Good thing they are so easy to make.
