3 sheets of summer zentangle patterns and templates for the beach, popsicles and sun

You know that I love creating and sharing easy zentangle patterns and printable templates. Zentangle or doodling has become a way for me and my kids to relax and be creative. It seemed like I needed to make more summer zentangle patterns and summer templates. So, I've created these sheets of beach, summer food, and summer sun templates and shared the step-by-step instructions for making 4 summer easy zentangle patterns. Grab your supplies and let's go!

Okay, what is a zentangle? Originally, I thought that a zentangle was just doodling…I was wrong. The zentangle method is a trademarked process based on a theory developed by founders Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas. You have undoubtedly seen this patterning art form before, it has become incredibly popular. “ZEN” means calm, and “TANGLE” means a collection of overlapping patterns. ZENTANGLE is the bringing together of the calm and the pattern. It was originally based on using a 3 ½ inch square of heavy stock paper and a black fine marker and various patterns that turn into a creative piece of art. We didn’t follow the exact Zentangle method, but we had a lot of fun experimenting.

Summer is a great time to relax and doodle. Last summer I shared another simple sun template, but this time I wanted to create more, and I added beach-themed and summer food-themed zentangle templates and patterns. Of course, you could just use these coloring pages, but everything gets more meditative and fun when you draw zentnagle patterns. Have you tried to zentangle before? If you haven't, be sure to check out our post for beginners, filled with great tips.

Let's start by exploring our summer zentangle patterns. I've created a printable step-by-step instruction sheet with 4 different summer zentangle patterns. So, let's make our way through the patterns. Don't forget you can always print our blank step-by-step sheet to practice patterns on.

First, is the sun with bold sun rays zentangle pattern. Start by drawing the heart of the sun. I started in the corner and drew multiple layers of arches radiating from the corner. Then add the sun rays shooting from the sun to the other side of the space you are doodling inside of. Now, fill the voids you have created with patterns and designs. This is a great option for filling large spaces. In the end, you have created a bold sun and all of its beautiful rays of light and pattern.

Next is a much simpler summer sun zentangle pattern. For this one, start by drawing the classic sun shape - a circle with rays of lines. Turn the page in different directions to help you switch up the pattern of suns. Fill your space with suns. And, in the end, I added even more, shorter lines/rays to each sun. I love the randomness of this pattern.

Then I drew a beachy wave zentangle pattern. Start with the base of rolling waves. Then draw curls, almost like the number 2, evenly spaced. Then add a line from the top of the wave that will connect the waves. This one might take a little practice. And, you can add more bumpy waves to the curly waves. Have fun with this one. Again, this pattern works well in larger spaces.

Finally, I wanted to make a summer food zentangle pattern...I love summer food, don't you?! I started with a couple of suns in the corners and then added slices of watermelon, slices of oranges or limes, and finished with ice cream cones. I mixed all the fruit and ice cream together in one space, but you focus on one fruit at a time too. What other summer food would you include in your zentangle patterns? I think I need to do some more food zentangle patterns!

Printable Summer Zentangle or Coloring Templates

Okay, now that you know a few summer zentangle designs, let's have fun with our printable summer templates. I created 4 beach zentangle templates - flip-flops, beach ball, starfish, and a seashell. And, 4 summer food zentangle templates - popsicle, ice cream cone, and pineapple. And, I had to include another sun template. How fun are these?!

Printable Beach Zentangle Template

I like to print all of my zentangle templates on white cardstock, so the paper is sturdy and smooth so the ultra fineline markers won't bleed through the paper. I decided to stick with black markers for the beach and food designs, but I wanted to mix things up with the sun. Our beach templates include a classic beach ball, flip-flops, and two different seashells. I like how there are many different spaces to add the doodles.

And, the summer food template is a favorite! I have a classic ice cream cone, a popsicle and a pineapple. I love that the pineapple has so many little voids where the patterns can be drawn. This one is going to be fun to fill in, don't you think?

While I had shared another sun template previously, I like the wavy sun rays on this sun. And, I really liked using the colorful marker. It looks joyful to me. What do you think?

These are a fun summer activity for a rainy day or a sunny day in a little piece of shade. Great for kids of all ages to sit, draw, and create something beautiful. As always, I love to put on a good playlist - in this case, I opted for summer classics. Zentangle is a wonderful way to disconnect from the online world and connect with yourself. I think that I will be cutting these out and finding somewhere to hang them in the house. Maybe turn them into a summer garland to hang?

The question is which summer zentangle template and pattern do you like best?
