I do love a good egg carton craft. And, the holiday season is a great time to bust out those empty egg cartons. I mean, if you're doing all kinds of holiday baking you are going to be able to make plenty of egg carton reindeer! This project is another one of our favourite reindeer crafts. We can't get enough of these little critters.
I am always looking for ways to reduce, reuse and recycle...especially at Christmastime. So, when it comes to Christmas crafting I do love finding ways to use egg cartons, toilet paper rolls or things you can find in nature. I've been wanting to make egg carton reindeer for a while now and I finally set about making these silly little deer. Hope you have fun making this silly Christmas craft!
How to Make an Egg Carton Reindeer Craft
paper egg carton
brown acrylic paint
red and black pom pom
brown pipe cleaners
glue gun
scissors
Okay, the first step is to cut apart the egg carton. Use the scissors to cut the carton into individual cells. The egg carton cells will be the body of the reindeer. The noses, or snouts, of the reindeer, are the little bumps between two cells. You can also use the tip of the taller dividers in the egg carton. We simply need some sort of nosepiece.
Use the glue gun to adhere the snout to the front of the reindeer's face. Pick a smooth side of the egg carton.
Once the nose is glued in place, it's time to paint the egg carton reindeer. I used a honey brown colour of acrylic paint. You could use whatever brown paint you have on hand. You may need more than one coat. Be sure to paint right over any glue that may have squished out under the nose. This will totally hide the glue.
Next up are the pipe cleaner reindeer antlers. Cut the pipe cleaners into 6-inch pieces for the main part of the antler. And, you need 2, 3-inch pieces for each antler. These shorter pieces will make the "trees" of the antlers.
Use a push pin (or the tip of a pipe cleaner) to poke a hole in the side of the reindeer's head. This is where the antlers will go. Feed the long pipe cleaner into one side and out the other side of the reindeer's head. Twist the little pipe cleaner pieces onto the ends of the longer piece. Place them wherever you like.
Next up, bring out the glue gun again. Time to glue on the googly eyes and the pompom noses. If your team of reindeer includes Rudolph, be sure to have a red pompom on hand!
Now, you could totally turn these into egg carton reindeer ornaments to hang on the tree. Simply glue a loop of string to the back of each reindeer. But, I like having them hanging out around the house. I've popped our reindeer on our open shelving in our kitchen. They look pretty cute hanging out in there.
