Hello November...what should we do?

By Jen

I'm changing things up a little. The first Friday of every month will now be a "to do" list for the month ahead. I decided to do this not only to help me keep track of the things I want to do, but so I could share what is going in the city before it happens.  In order to keep the list interesting I'm going to throw it out to you and ask that if you have an event you are hosting or attending, let me know...send me an email or write it in the comments section. I'll also try and include any tips that might help you plan your trip to an event. Now, I'm here in Toronto - but I know you are all over the place. Let me know what is happening in your 'hood.

Made by Hand Show (Nov 5)

Fingers crossed I can make it out tomorrow to what is shaping up to be a pretty cool showcase of over 100 artists. You might remember my friend Michelle...she'll be there with her beautiful cards and paper crafts...check out her holiday collection. FYI bring in a copy of the Made by Hand Show flyer and you receive free admission!

Royal Agricultural Winter Fair  (Nov 4 - 13th)

Fall in the city just isn't complete without a trip to the Royal. Check out the gigantic vegetables or catch a performance by the incredible SuperDogs. How amazing is it for a city kid to get to hang out with cows, goats, sheep and chickens. I have never gone to the horse show...but it is apparently quite spectacular. A great tip is to go on a weekday evening. It isn't as busy in the evening and there are still great shows taking place.
BabyTime Show (Nov 11-13th)
When you got married, did you love going to the National Bridal Show? Then you will LOVE the BabyTime Show...seriously. Tons of information and lots of free samples to pick up. You can find out everything you know about having and raising a baby.
Gourmet Food and Wine Expo (Nov 17 - 20)
The name of this event says it all...gourmet food and wine. Do I really need to say anything more? FYI this is an adult only event (19+)...leave the babies at home.

Santa Claus Parade (Nov 20th)

This Toronto tradition is the official beginning of the holiday season. There are a few changes this year...the route has been altered, no more walk down Yonge Street. Also, for the first time ever not only will Mrs.Claus be at the parade, she is getting her own float. I think it's about time?! This is an event we never miss. Watching my kids smile as they see the magical floats sail by is precious. Be sure to bring snacks, drinks and blankets to sit on. It always takes longer than you think it is going to. A little tip, bring sidewalk chalk and skipping ropes - portable fun things to do while you wait for the parade to arrive. FYI go to the website and print off a parade colouring book.
One of a Kind Craft Show and Sale (Nov 24th- Dec 4th)

Okay, this is another event we never miss. I find a lot of inspiration walking cruising around with my girlfriends. This is also an event that it is better to attend in the evening. Don't forget do get your free readmission ticket as you leave...that way you can come back and pick up the item you regret not getting in the first place!

Harbourfront - Day of the Dead Festival (Nov 8-9th)
Mexican food, Mexican crafts and Mexican music - it sounds warm and sunny to me. This is a massive event that is fun for everyone in your family.
Cavalcade of Lights (Nov 26th)
Head down to Nathan Philips Square in the heart of downtown and watch the holiday light turn on. An impressive skating and music show is followed by the switching on of hundreds of holiday lights.

Other things to do...

Fall back - this Saturday night/Sunday morning don't forget to set your clocks back one hour...bring on the slightly brighter mornings.
Be thankful - November 22nd is American Thanksgiving! Which means one thing the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade...I seriously love watching this with my kids! It has become our family tradition.
Food bank and toy/clothing drive donations - this is the time of year when we really need to focus on helping one another - put together your donations for your local food bank.
Local light show and parade - check your local newspaper and find out when your areas parade and light shows are...small town parades are amazing.
Shop local - head to your local main street for holiday shopping...support your local businesses at this festive time of year.
Get outside - the weather is getting cooler but that doesn't mean you have to stay indoors...bundle up and head outside...the crisp weather is glorious!
What are you and your family doing this month?
