Fun Family Canadian Content on Netflix #StreamTeam

By Jen

Oh, Canada. The land of beautiful landscapes, multiculturalism, year long maternity leave, hockey and hilarious comedians. Fun Family Canadian Content on Netflix - We share our favourite Canadian movies and TV programs that we are watching on Netflix right now - perfect for family movie night! | Family Movie Night Ideas | StreamTeam

Yes, you may or may not realize that some of your favourite actors are actually Canadian. Canadian actors, writers, directors and production teams can be found at theatres and all over your television. This summer we have been enjoying a variety of fun Canadian content on Netflix. My girls and I wanted to share a list of our favourite Canadian family TV shows and movies.

The Great Outdoors - While The Great Outdoors is set in Wisconsin, it looks and feels like a little piece of Muskoka cottage country. Perhaps it feels like a scene from a Canadian family summer vacation because it stars two of our favourite comedians, Dan Ackroyd and John Candy. Playing brother-in-laws and fathers with completely different parenting styles this movie is a classic that I could not wait to share with my girls. The Great Outdoors hits all the summer comedy classic moments - a bear attack, a bat in the cottage scene, water skiing gone hilariously wrong and even a little teen romance. My girls laughed the whole way through. the great outdoors

Project Mc2 - From a classic film from the 8o's to a ultra-modern, tech driven show for kids. STEM loving tween girls unite! If your tween girl loves science, chemistry, physics and engineering then she will love Project Mc2. Four super smart and creative tween girls team up to stop a plot against a not-so-charming young prince. The girls have to use their stellar chemistry, physics, math and science skills to defeat the "bad guys". All of this under the guidance of "The Quail" - the head of an ultra-secret intelligence organization who happens to be real-life mathematician Danica McKellar (Winnie from The Wonder Years). My youngest daughter LOVED this show and we cannot wait for another season.  Project MC2

Cool Runnings - We watched Cool Runnings on a too-hot-to-go-outside summer afternoon. The perfect way to cool down, watching a movie about the Winter Olympics first bobsled team from Jamaica. We laughed and cried our way through this one. With John Candy as their coach and the Calgary Olympics as the setting, this movie shines a light on Canada from beginning to end. Cool Runnings Movie

Titanic - What summer is complete without a viewing of James Cameron's Titanic? We waited until we were sure that our girls could handle the emotional scenes before watching Titanic...it is a tragedy after all. And, we may have skipped through the steamy car scene, but otherwise Titanic is an epic film that we enjoy watching every summer.

Super Why - While my tweens may have moved on from Super Why...we definitely recommend this Canadian made children's program. Step inside Storybook Village with Whyatt (Super Why) and his storybook character friends. They solve problems that arise through the use of books and reading. Your kids will be "Super Readers", singing along and helping the team solve the problems in no time. Super Why Image

The Big Short - If the kids happen to be away at camp or Grandma's house and a date night slips into your schedule, be sure to check out Canadian Ryan Gosling in The Big Short. This movie was nothing like what I had expected. It was so much fun and so informative. Seriously, the ensemble cast was magnificent. Add this one to your summer must-watch list.

Have you been embracing our Canadian comedians this summer? Do you have a favourite Canadian TV program, movie or actor? Share your favourites below and we will be sure to check them out.
