Okay, what is a zentangle? Originally, I thought that a zentangle was just doodling…I was wrong. The zentangle method is a trademarked process based on a theory developed by founders Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas. You have undoubtedly seen this patterning art form before, it has become incredibly popular. “ZEN” means calm, and “TANGLE” means a collection of overlapping patterns. ZENTANGLE is the bringing together of the calm and the pattern. It was originally based on using a 3 ½ inch square of heavy stock paper and a black fine marker and various patterns that turn into a creative piece of art. We didn’t follow the exact Zentangle method, but we had a lot of fun experimenting.

I love taking inspiration from the seasons. I've had fun with summer, fall, and spring, this time, I'm taking all the inspo from winter. I love the winter, and I live in a place where our winters are snowy and cold. And, while the Christmas zentangle patterns I've shared are a little wintery, these ones really celebrate the season.

Easy Snowflake Zentangle Pattern
Okay, first up, let's learn how to draw four simple winter doodle patterns. First up is a flurry of snowflakes. This snowflake design would look lovely inside a large space in your zentangle. Start by drawing a basic 4-line star shape. Then, add the small details to turn the star into a snowflake. You can add circles, dots, small lines, whatever you like. Remember, no two snowflakes are alike. Once you have one snowflake, draw more. Rotate your page so the snowflakes rotate as well. When you have filled the space with snowflakes, you can then add different sizes of snowballs to the design.
Swirling Mitten Doodle Pattern
Next up is my mitten doodle pattern. Mittens are so simple to draw. I kept mine very basic. Start by drawing a pair of mittens. Two mittens with the thumbs facing different directions, like our hands. Add a little details to the cuff of the mittens. As you add more and more mittens, add different designs in the cuff details. Some of mine had straight lines, zig-zags, and dots. Fill the space with mittens - with different cuff details and alternating thumbs. Again, rotating the page will help you rotate the direction of the mittens. When you have filled the space with mittens, it's time for the final detail. Add swirling strands of "string" to connect pairs of mittens that have the same cuff detail. They don't need to be close to each other. Add all kinds of swiriling string to fill any blank spaces.
Basket weave winter scarf zentangle design
In the past, I've shared how to draw simple basket weave zentangle patterns, this time I wanted to make the weaving from scarves. For this, you really want to work with small sections of scarves at a time. Add alternating horizontal and vertical scarf pieces to create the basket weave. Follow the printable directions to fully understand how to make the pattern work.

Winter Forest Doodle Pattern
Finally, I have shared how to draw a simple winter forest doodle pattern. This one is all about alternating triangular tree shapes. Start with one triangle tree, with a little tree stump. Add a row of trees. Then turn the page 180 degrees, and draw a row of trees, upside down. When you have filled the space with upside-down and right-side-up trees, you can add alternating colored stumps and dot-filled trees. Or, add whatever alternating designs you'd like. This one is super simple.
Printable winter shape templates

I've shared 3 printable winter shape templates that you can print and fill with zentangle patterns. These winter shapes can also be used as winter coloring sheets. I've created a pair of mittens, a coloring sheet with a winter hat and scarf, and a sheet with two big snowflakes. Poured a cup of tea, put on a chill playlist, and did some doodling inside the winter hat and scarf. The perfect way to end a winter's day.
