Earth Day - what are you taking up?

By Jen

So, last Earth Day it was all about giving something up. You might remember that our family made 4 main commitments.
not use toxic cleaners for 1 year
not buy anything new for 1 week
eat vegetarian for 1 week
no television for 1 week

At the end of the year, we did pretty well. The hardest one was not watching television. Really, it was hardest on my husband and I. The kids hardly watch any t.v. but when the girls go to bed, we watch our favourite shows. So, yes it was hard...but we did it! What will we commit to this year?

Earth Day Canada is asking us to take up a new habit. Do something new that is good for the planet. I love when a positive spin gets put on things. So, what earth-friendly new habits have we committed to?
Drink tap water and get water-wise - more than 4 weeks
Okay, this one is pretty easy since my husband works in the business of building water plants. We are HUGE fans of clean tap water. I am so fortunate to live in a city and a neighbourhood that has access to clean, delicious drinking water. And while we try and be water-wise, I know there is always room for improvement. Especially as we head into the warm, dry summer months. We are committed.

Detox our personal care routine - more than 4 weeks

Another easy one for our crew. We've done a good purging of our cleaning products for the house and for our bodies. However, I know there is always more to learn. In fact it's time to do a little investigating into what exactly we are using...come by next week for the complete rundown.

Eat and prepare plant-based meals at home - 1 week

This one is similar to last years commitment to eat vegetarian...but I think we can kick it up a notch and try and eat vegan for one week. It's going to take some planning. We'll aim to do this one in the warmer months, when there is more local produce available.

Move and activate our lifestyle with outdoor, unplugged activities - more than 4 weeks

Getting outside to play is an ongoing commitment to ourselves and our children. That we can reaffirm it here is just icing on the cake.

Now, Earth Day.ca is putting the challenge to all of you. Will you sign up and commit to take up a new healthy habit? Healthy for you, your family and the planet. What will you take up this Earth Day?

I like the positive spin on it, too! There are so many great things we CAN do.
