Clothes peg alphabet

By Jen

Isn't it funny how learning can present itself in the most unusual places. The other day I picked up a basket of clothes pegs, to use in a game at a wedding shower we hosted. The next day, as we were recovering from the excitement of the wedding shower, my youngest daughter collected all the clothes-pegs and started exploring. I watched as she attached them and detached them. Carefully pinching them and watching closely how they could create a giant tower. An idea dawned on me..."why don't you try and make letters" I suggested. My daughter thought this was a great idea. She clipped and clipped and was very proud of herself when she figured out how to make a circular shape. I could see the wheels turning in her mind. A bit of math and a bit of reading and a bit of language development. I photographed each letter as she made them, one at a time.

My daughter even made all the letters in her name. I think I might turn the photographs of her name into a framed collage that I will mount in her bedroom.
When the letters were done, we moved on to making colour and number patterns. We added "play with clothes-pegs" to the I'm Not Bored jar. A seriously simple and inexpensive way for any child to learn.

Great idea! My girls love to play with the clothes-pegs too - sorting, counting, etc. Next time we'll try making letters 🙂

That is so great! I now am on the lookout for those clothes pegs! I love how you let her develop it all herself and how she really learned through it! Thanks for linking up to Monday Madness. Hope to see you again tomorrow.
