Canada's Parks Day

By Jen

Tomorrow, July 16th, is officially Canada's Parks Day...and the 100th anniversary of Parks Canada. I thought it was worth bumping Kitchen Confidential today to honour one of Canada's greatest assets - our glorious parks.
If you live anywhere in Canada, there is a park near you. As my daughter explained to us the other day - "a park is a big green space, and a playground is a place with play equipment"...seriously. She's absolutely right. A park is a big green space - the play equipment is only limited by your imagination.

All across Canada provincial, national, territorial and community parks will be celebrating this event...look here for a listing of events. If you are in Toronto, you can head to Centre Island for Parks Day 2011, a rockin' concert with Sarah Harmer, the Skydiggers and Serena Ryder. There are also concerts planned in Vancouver (K'Naan, The Sheepdogs and Kate Morgan) and Montreal (Les Trois Accords and Marie-Mai).
Later this summer we'll be camping in Algonquin Park, Rock Lake to be exact. If you have never been to Algonquin, it is well worth the trip. The girls are looking forward to swimming at the beach and going hiking on the many trails. I'll have a few posts about getting ready for a camping trip coming up! Here are some pics from our trip last summer to Mont Tremblant, Quebec - specifically Mont Tremblant National Park.

In honour of Canada's Parks Day the CBC (another national icon) asked Sarah Harmer to create a new campfire song. Sarah Harmer is a park's advocate...find out about the work she has done for the escarpment in Burlington on her website and on Perlofburlington.org.

Sarah's song "The Park Song" was released and played on the CBC Radio this morning. You can listen to the song here and even download the sheet music. Why download the sheet music? Then you can sit around the campfire, guitar in hand, and sing along to this beautiful song. Have a listen.
Have a great weekend everyone...hope you have a chance to get outdoors!
