Outdoor Skate II - Greenwood Park

By Jen

So, we are still in need of some snow! Hard to believe that it is getting close to mid-January and we haven't had any snow! I know I'm going to eat these words...oh well. Week 2 of our family's challenge to skate outside every week and we did it! Well, half the team did it. My husband and my eldest daughter went skating while I stayed home with my youngest daughter, who was sick. On the positive side while they skated - we made turkey/chicken pasta soup! Perfect post-skate dinner.

This week the rink of choice is situated in a local park...Greenwood Park (at the north/west corner of Dundas St and Greenwood Ave). When I chat with other mom's in our 'hood Greenwood Park always seems to pop up. The best thing about this park is that they have 2 rinks! One rink has boards and the other does not. The rink with the boards is primarily used for shinny and the other is primarily used for pleasure skating. When my daughter came home she was exhausted...they had skated for an hour! This skating once a week is really going to improve their skills. Fingers crossed everyone is healthy this week so we can ALL get outside to skate.  Here's the breakdown.

parking - street parking available
cost to skate - free
skate rentals - none available
skate change area - indoor
hot chocolate availability - you will have to head south to Queen St./Leslieville
or head north to Gerrard St.
ice quality - great - indoor rink quality
kid friendliness - very, the 2 rinks mean more room for early skaters,
kids can use supports and use hockey sticks
The City of Toronto operates many outdoor rinks in the city. This might not be the last one we visit. If you are looking for a local outdoor rink check out this link for all the details.
REMEMBER...
It is important to play safe.
Children under 6 years of age MUST wear a CSA approved helmet
Children 12 years of age and younger MUST be supervised

So far, so good. Are there many/any outdoor rinks where you are? Thanks for following along.

To skate every week is a challenge! Very impressive. The problem I find with more than one child, is that one is usually poorly - they rotate don't they?

The only let down for me on this one is the hot chocolate availability! It is a must so i am think hot flask!

Thank you for linking up to Family Frolics! Please come back this week with another post. 🙂
