Many years ago we made our first toilet paper roll hearts and at the time, we turned them into the sweetest necklaces. In fact, we love making Valentine's Day crafts with toilet paper rolls. I collect up toilet paper rolls all year 'round so that I always have some on hand to craft with. But, if you don't have any stored away you can actually buy paper rolls to craft with.

To begin with, let's make a pile of toilet paper roll hearts. Start by cutting straight along the length of the toilet paper rolls, creating an opening in the roll. Now, cut the toilet paper roll into 3 even(ish) rings. With your fingers, press each ring in half, with the cut end at the top. This fold will be the bottom tip of the heart.

Now that you have a pile of toilet paper rings, use your fingers to gently turn the two open ends of the roll down, creating the top of the heart shape. Run a line of hot glue along one end and then turn the two ends together. Press the ends together with your fingers, creating the top of the heart.

You will want to use a low-temperature glue gun for this project. And, if you are making these hearts with little kids, you are going to want an adult to do this gluing part of the craft. Even a low-temperature glue stick is still pretty hot, so be careful.

Once you have glued together the hearts, it is time to paint them all pink. I chose to paint mine 3 different shades of pink. To get the intensity of the color that I wanted I had to paint 2 coats of paint. Remember you will want to paint the inside and outside and the edges of each heart. Set the hearts aside to fully dry.

This is a great time to make the pom poms for the garland. I liked the idea of adding pom poms to the garland. If you follow me, you know I love making pom poms. I've shared a complete step-by-step tutorial for making pom poms and I also have a YouTube video where I share how to make pom poms. I love using my pom pom maker. For this garland, I used the 2 ½" diameter pom pom tool. Again, I made 3 different color pom poms - red, light pink, and dark pink.

How to assemble the toilet roll heart garland

Let's assemble the heart and pom pom garland. I wanted to feed a length of yarn through each toilet paper roll heart. To make this easier, I first poked a sharp embroidery needle into each side of the heart. I then threaded a larger, dull embroidery needle with a long length of light pink yarn, the same yarn I used for the pom poms.

Simply feed the embroidery needle, with the yarn, through the heart, from one side through the middle and out the other side. Push the heart along the yarn and now it's time to add a pom pom.

To add a pom pom to the garland, I like to find the center string, that I used to bind the pom pom and feed the embroidery needle through the center of the pom pom. Use that string as a guide. Then repeat with another heart and pom pom all the way along the length of the yarn.

Once you've made your garland it's time to hang it up. Where will you hang your Valentine's Day toilet paper roll heart garland?
