Kid made Olympic Flag

kid made olympic flagI have always dreamed of holding the Olympic torch and today I am glad to be holding the torch…well, it’s the Kids Bloggers Go Olympics torch! I am excited all the same.

I really enjoy looking at things that we see everyday and discovering what they truly mean. One of the major icons of the Olympics, is the flag.  I asked my girls to look at the Olympic flag and let me know what their first thoughts about the design of the flag were. They said that the rings are connected because the Olympics are about countries coming together. They guessed that the flag had a simple design, with lots of white, so that it would look peaceful, the same way that the Olympics are about peace. I was able to give them a few more facts about the flag. For instance, did you know that the colours of the rings and the white background were selected because these colours were found in all the flags of the countries that were participating in the Olympics at the time it was designed (1914).

I knew that we needed to make our own kid made Olympic flag to proudly hang on our front door for the duration of the Olympics. The question was, how would we make it? Many ideas were floated about and then my youngest daughter suggested that we use all the ideas in one flag…just like all the different countries competing in the Olympics. I like the way she thinks! Here is what we did…

large sheet of white paper
red, blue, black, green and yellow paint
paint brush

1. apply paint to child’s hand and stamp the first ring in a circle.

2. trace the size child’s hand to determine the size of the second ring.

3. dip child’s fingertip into the paint and stamp the third ring.

4. repeat step 2 for the fourth ring.
5. trace child’s hand with pencil and paint outline for the final ring.

This was a really fun activity. The best part is how any child can personalize the flag in any way they like. I love how my daughter came up with all of these fabulous ways of painting the rings. The girls also made a second, traditional style, flag. Our front door now looks like we are ready to celebrate the  Olympic games!kid made olympic flag 2

True, it is great for learning colours. I hoped the colours would blend more where they crossed, to show colour mixing, but it didn’t work out that way. That’s for the next project!
