Green Life – taking father’s day outside

Who said that father’s day had to be all about ties and coffee mugs? Last year we took mother’s day outside and this year we are doing the same for father’s day. One of our favourite places in the city is our local ravine. It really is a hidden jewel tucked into our ‘hood.

The best thing about visiting the ravine is racing leaves in the creek. I clearly remember doing the exact same thing when I was a little girl. Dropping a tiny leaf into the creek and watching it float it’s way through the twists and turns somehow felt magical. After last weekend’s Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Flotilla we have been thinking about boats…lots and lots of different boats. So, for father’s day we thought it would be fun to make some origami boats and take them over to our ravine for a little race! Making origami boats is actually quite easy. Here is how we did it.

Using a piece of origami paper, fold 2 opposites sides to meet in the middle…

Fold each corner into the middle, creating points on either end of the paper…

Fold the top of each point into the middle…

Now is the tricky part…open along the middle line…

Turn the paper inside out…

Press down the folds and your boat is done!

As I said, the floatila last weekend really inspired this craft so it only seemed fitting that we name and decorate out little boats. Make them a little more festive.

This father’s day we’ll be hitting the road to visit our puppy (we are aiming to visit every other weekend until we can bring him home) and when we get back home we’ll be grabbing our boats and setting sail in our lovely, little ravine.

Will you be taking your father’s day outside this year?

I love these boats! I think we’ll make them this weekend (too bad Dad is out of the country at the moment) Found you via The Magic Onions. Thanks for sharing.

I agree about celebrating outdoors, we went to a beautiful garden park on Mother’s Day and we have a special hike planned for Father’s Day, can’t wait. Enjoy your Father’s Day Weekend, your boats look like a lot of fun, and of course visiting your puppy sounds wonderful as well, we all love dogs. :)
