As I pulled the books off the shelf in the library my eldest daughter said "Oh, I love that author!" When my youngest daughter saw the books she didn't want to let go of the books as we checked them out. Which author had my girls this excited? The Virtual Book Club for Kids featured author for October is Amy Krouse Rosenthal, and my kids love her.
Which books had my kids so excited? Rosenthal's "Wumbers" and "Plant a Kiss". The girls had read the books before we got home. The book that intrigued and challenged them the most was "Wumbers." Wumbers are words combined with numbers...or as the cover explains "It's a book. It's a game. It's words cre8ed with numbers." This gr8 book is an in10nse read for a 6 year old. But, as she read it she laughed and called me over to show me all the interesting wumbers.
After reading the book it was time to give writing wumbers a try. I asked my eldest daughter to try writing a few lines using wumbers. It wasn't as simple as she thought it might be. Here's what she wrote...
I think she did a pretty good job. This book was so much fun to read. Now we are searching for possible wumbers everywhere we look. I loved how this book immediately inspired my girls to chat and write and read some more. And, as for the book "Plant a Kiss" well what's better than planting a kiss on my girls' cheeks?!
Now, it's time to see what books and activities everyone else has been inspired to do. The great thing about Amy Krouse Rosenthal is that her book cover a wide range of age groups. There really is a book for everyone in her collection. I cannot wait to check out the other blogs that are participating in the book club.
