Little Kids and Nail Polish - An Eco-Friendly Alternative

By Jen

Piggy Paint 1 Nail polish. Is there anything stinkier and more toxic than nail polish? I mean really, it's paint that won't wash off with water...for your nails. I've never been a huge nail polish wearer. The odd time I'll have polish on my toes, but that's about it. And as with most things in life...my daughters feel the exact opposite. They say "Bring on the nail polish!" So, what's an eco-mama to do? Go on the hunt for a quality alternative to traditional nail polish. Fortunately, we have found an eco-friendly alternative - Piggy Paint.

Piggy Paint is a nail polish that is as "natural as mud" - well, that's what their slogan says. Upon doing a little research I have discovered that Piggy Paint uses a water-based formula, is non-toxic, low odour, cruelty free and is packaged in bottles made from recycled glass. It ticks all the boxes I was looking at when trying to pick a nail polish for my girls.

Since Piggy Paint is designed with kids in mind it is available in an entire rainbow of colours. It wasn't hard for my girls to pick out a couple of fun polish colours. Another "kid-friendly" design feature can be found inside the bottle. While the bottle itself is the same size as a traditional bottle of polish, the brush is slightly narrower and perfectly sized for applying onto smaller, child-sized nails.

So, does it smell? Nope. The three of us huddled into our bathroom and I got painting toes and nails. When I completed the first coat my youngest daughter said it didn't smell like we were even putting on nail polish. It really had hardly any odour. I'm a migraine sufferer and odours can really knock me out...seriously, low (and not stinky) odour. piggy paint girls

And, how did it wear? It wore pretty well. Truthfully, it didn't wear as long as traditional solvent-based polishes...but, maybe that's okay? It stayed on long enough for my girls to enjoy wearing the polish (we applied the clear top coat). They're kids, they are pretty tough on their nails. To say the least, I would much rather reapply Piggy Paint, then have a polish that is filled with solvents and chemicals. It's a fair trade off.

All in all Piggy Paint is a great eco-friendly alternative to traditional polishes. In fact, I've even ordered a couple of colours for myself...there are no age restrictions. Piggy Paint can be found in many children's stores throughout Canada and the US, or you can order directly from the online shop.

Disclosure : I received Piggy Paint products as compensation for writing this post and sharing my honest opinion. The opinions on this blog are my own.
