Pie or Cake - that is the question

collage image of chocolate cake, and lemon pie and title pie or cake that is the question.

This weekend I will be celebrating my birthday. Another year older and another year wiser...right? With wisdom comes the knowledge that I will be in charge of making my own birthday dessert. Why not? I'm a half-decent baker and I know what I like. With age comes the confidence to branch out from a traditional vanilla birthday cake on my big day. The question is, do I want to?

Are you a cake person or a pie person? Having a birthday during the holiday season means that I have been enjoying a lot of amazing pies as of late. So, does that mean I should stick with cake? If I do make a birthday cake, what kind should I make? Decadent chocolate layer cake with rich chocolate icing, simple and delicious. Of course, I also enjoy red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting. Then again, I could branch out into a totally different and new direction. A birthday only comes around once a year; this is a tough decision.

When I look inside my heart (and my stomach), I know what I truly want. My most favourite dessert...lemon meringue pie. My grandmother used to make the most incredible lemon meringue pie. While she is still alive, she isn't really baking a lot these days. I think I am going to have to pick up the torch and give it a try. I have always been afraid of baking a lemon meringue pie. Something about the combination of the crust, the lemon layer, and the meringue topping has scared me off. However, this year I'm going to embrace the "another year older and wiser" motto and give it a try. So, cross your fingers and toes for me...I will report back and let you know how it goes.

    Pie, of course!

I made Chocolate Chip Pecan Pie for my son's 7th birthday, which was a week before Thanksgiving, and he loved it!

But I must say, since I started making a pie every week, I really miss cake, and all the other sweet treats I used to make. I'm going to have to do something about that!

Enjoy your pie, and happy birthday!
