International Women's Day

By Jen

This one is worth celebrating.

International Women's Day is celebrating it's 100th year of existence. At the International Conference of Working Women, held in Copenhagen in 1910, the idea of an International Women's Day was tabled. The idea was proposed by a German woman named Clara Zetkin, and was unanimously approved. Thus, the following year the first annual IWD was held in various countries around the world. Imagine, the seed of an idea being first planted and growing to 100 years later...amazing.

Canada's theme for this year's IWD is "Strong Leadership. Strong Women. Strong World: Equality". Today, and in the coming days, across the country there will be various events celebrating women's achievements and the issues we still face today.

Let's face it women have come along, long way...but their is still more to overcome. After doing some quick research I learned that their are currently 67 women elected to the House of Commons in Canada. So, out of a possible 308 seats, 67 are women. I'm not great at math, but even I know this does not add up. While I applaud the Federal Government's theme for this year's IWD...I think there is still more work to be done to get more women into positions of leadership within our own country.

If you have an opportunity today head out to an event where you live, hop online and find out about some incredible women or spend some time with a phenomenal woman in your life. If you are a woman, reflect on the challenges you have faced in your life and celebrate all that you have accomplished. Today is for you! Happy International Women's Day!
