I love spring flowers, and I love making pom pom crafts. And, while most people consider dandelions a weed, I think they are lovely, bright, and definitely a spring flower. So, I wanted to figure out how to make pom pom dandelion flowers. These were a delight to make!

In the past, I shared a whole roundup of dandelion crafts and edible things you can make with dandelions. This time around, I wanted to make dandelions that will last. You know I love a pom pom craft. When I found the perfect dandelion yellow yarn at the craft store, I knew I had to make a bouquet of dandelions.

The first step is to start making the stem of the dandelion. I could have simply made a full yellow pom pom, but when you look at an actual dandelion, you can see that they have a bulb of green that sits under the petals. So, I needed to make the little green "bulb" first. For this, I used an egg carton. Use a utility knife to cut a small piece from the tall dividers in the egg carton.

Once you've cut the little portions, paint them green and set them aside to dry while you make the pom poms.

Now, I also observed that when dandelions are in bloom and are yellow, the flower petals tend not to unfurl all the way around; they have a flatter bottom. So, I opted to make half of a pom pom. Wrap the yarn around one half of the pom pom maker tool.

Then, close the wrapped half tightly and use sharp scissors to trim along the inner channel in the pom pom making tool.

When you've trimmed the yarn, now you will tightly wrap and tie a length of yellow yarn around the pom pom maker tool. This will tie the pom pom together, so be sure to tie it tightly, with a couple of knots.

After you've tied the string around the maker tool, open the tool and the dandelion half pom pom will slide off. Use your scissors to trim around the dandelion.

Now, it's time to assemble the pom pom dandelion. Heat up your glue gun. Fold the pipe cleaner in half and twist the two halves together, making a more sturdy stem.

Poke the folded end of the stem into the hole of the egg carton piece. Fold the end over, this will stop the pipe cleaner stem from sliding back out the hole.

Run a bead of hot glue along the top edge of the egg carton bulb and press the flat side of the pom pom dandelion into the glue. Make sure you press all the way around the egg carton bulb.

Make a few more dandelions until you have a sweet little bouquet. I popped our dandelions into a vase that will sit in our living room. I think that a little dandelion bouquet would make a lovely Mother's Day gift. Or, you could turn them into a dandelion crown that you could use for years to come.
