Happy Spring!!

By Jen

Well, we survived March break and now we move into spring! Yippee! I mean really, who doesn't love spring? Granted we are still in for some more cold weather and probably more snow...but the light is on at the end of the tunnel. On Sunday morning my eldest daughter danced her way into my bedroom and yelled "Happy Spring!" What a magnificent way to wake up.
The easiest way to bring spring into your home is through flowers. Whatever colour, size or species you enjoy. I've been working on making my own flowers...out of felt scraps. Here's how I did it.
You will need

- scissors
- pencil
- paper
- scraps of felt
- cookie cutter
- needle & thread
- scrap cardboard
Steps
option a: sketch a flower shape, free hand, onto a piece of cardboard
option b: trace the cookie cutter onto the cardboard
option c: select a flower cookie cutter, like mine,

and scrape your pencil along the sharp edge of the cookie cutter...stamp the cookie cutter onto the cardboard...the pencil will transfer the shape of the cookie cutter onto the cardboard

2. cut the flower shape out of the cardboard

3. draw three circles on the cardboard, vary the size by 5mm, and cut them out

4. using a pen or fabric marking pen, trace the flower shape onto the felt
5. once traced, cut out the flower shape
6. using a coordinating fabric, trace the circles onto the felt - then cut the circles out

7. once all the pieces are cut out, assemble the flower with circles in the middle

8. using a coordinating thread, stitch the circles onto the flower
Now that you have made a flower it is up to you how you wish to use the flower.

I stitched my flowers onto a piece of ribbon and draped the flower garland around my dining room window.

Also, I made a series of smaller flowers and stitched them onto hair elastics for my daughters. Another idea would be to stitch the flowers onto hairbands or pin backings so they can be attached to hats and coats.
However you choose to use the flowers...enjoy!
