I love searching through the stacks at our library and pulling out Halloween themed books. Last week I brought a big pile home and surprised the girls with a bunch of books to read. I love holiday books. What I love even more is the creative ways that we can use books to inspire crafty activities (wait until you see the spook-tacular books and activities featured below). One of the books in our pile was called “Thelonious Monster’s Sky-High Fly Pie” by Judy Sierra. In this book Thelonious prepares a trap/pie where hundreds of flies get stuck. Once stuck, he invites all of his monster friends over for a piece of pie. However, poor Thelonious forgot to bake the pie! The flies all up and fly away…with the pie. This fun book had my girls thinking about flies and pies, so they made fly pies.
I made a batch of The Imagination Tree’s no bake play dough, seasoned with cinnamon. We pulled out a couple of pie plates, forks and knives to use.
Instead of flies, the girls searched through the garden for plants to use…black eyed susan’s and japanese anemone seed pods.
They worked perfectly!
Most importantly the girls used a cardboard box for an oven and baked their pies. Slices of fly pie for everyone!
Check out these other incredibly fun Halloween books and activities…
Toddler Approved had fun creating a scarecrow puzzle after reading, “The Little Old Lady Who Wasn’t Afraid of Anything.”
“The Little Old Lady Who Wasn’t Afraid of Anything” also inspired Playing with Words 365 to create a collection of speech and language activities.
So many amazing ways to play with “5 Little Pumpkins” can be found over at Playing with Words 365.
More “5 Little Pumpkins” fun over at Creative Family Fun, adorable finger pumpkins to play along with.
And one more for “Five Little Pumpkins“…a variety of activities, including a fun name recognition game with Toddler Approved.
Create your own pumpkin patch collage inspired by “Boo To You” with KC Edventures.
Fill up the old lady’s belly along with Playing With Words 365, inspired by “There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed a Bat.“
“Duck and Goose Find A Pumpkin” had All Done Monkey making a pumpkin scavenger hunt and matching game.
“Brooms Are For Flying” inspired The Pleasantest Thing to have their very own spooky movement costume parade.
