When I was a little girl, I knew I had nothing to fear because Wonder Woman could always come to my rescue. How many dreams did I have where I would take a leap of the curb and fly across the sky. Wonder Woman was my television hero when I was a little girl.
As I grew up the female role models I looked for on television changed. I sought out girls who I could identify with in my adolescent years - the Keaton sisters and the Cosby girls were my ever present friends. As a mom, with daughters, I know the role that characters on television can play in a young girl's life. Studies have shown that girls as young as six are influenced by gender stereotypes, as parents we have to crush those gender stereotypes. I'm always looking for interesting female characters to introduce to my girls.
The way that kids access programs today is totally different than when I was a kid. With the abundance of online and streaming content the doors are wide open. Thankfully, we've discovered some really strong, interesting and engaging programs on Netflix. To celebrate Women's History Month, we've gathered together a few of our favourite female characters on Netflix for kids. Your kid might just find her Wonder Woman.
Favourite Female Characters on Netflix for Kids
Velma and Daphne Yep, good old Velma and Daphne are still on the road solving mysteries with the rest of those meddling kids. My youngest daughter recently discovered Scooby Doo and she reignited my love of the show. I didn't realize what an important role Velma and Daphne play in the gang. Without Velma and Daphne's cleverness and insightful observations there is no way they could uncover the truth behind each mystery.
The Project Mc2 Girls If your girls haven't watched this show yet, then need to - like now. The Project Mc2 girls are a group of high school students turned secret agents. Each girl bring a different skill to the group. This show is all about STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering and Math...and somehow it's also super fun, cool and engaging. My daughter is partial to Adrienne the chemist and Camryn the clever engineer.
Abstract: The Art of Design Netflix is a great source of very cool documentaries and their newest original series, Abstract: The Art of Design, is amazing. The new series introduces viewers to seriously interesting and innovative people in the world of design. The episode on graphic designer Paula Scher was so inspiring. The pace of the show keeps kids captivated. I love programs that reveal the story behind awesome women. The Paula Scher episode is a great example of a women who followed her passion and it led her to a most remarkable life.
Violet Baudelaire Well, it is hard to talk about great female characters on Netflix without talking about Violet Baudelaire. The Baudelaire children's life has been turned upside down in A Series of Unfortunate Events. Despite the despair and constant struggles they face, Violet always seems to be able to come up with a clever solution. When she ties back her hair, you know that everything is going to be okay.
Chef's Table Okay, I am slightly obsessed with everything chef and so are my kids. The Chef's Table series is a window into the life of successful chef's from around the world. The female chef's they have introduced are awesome. Their stories are totally inspiring and the food they make is super drool worthy. Travel around the world and discover how chef's balance work and family and more importantly how they come up with those crazy recipes.
This list is really just the tip of the iceberg of great female characters on Netflix right now. We didn't even get into Astrid (Dragons: Race to the Edge), Rachel Berry (Glee) and they brought back She-Ra! Plus, we are super excited to check out the new Julie Andrew's program for kids Julie's Greenroom - Julie Andrews!
Who is your child's favourite female character? What is your family watching?
