Fall Leaf Wreath Craft for Tweens

I love making a new wreath for the front door when the seasons change. Over the years, I've made many wreaths - some with pom poms, some with egg carton flowers, and some with felt. This time around, I'm sharing how to make a fall felt wreath with the kids. This one is a colorful fall felt leaf wreath.

I really love welcoming guests into our home with a wreath on my front door. I like making my own wreaths. Making a wreath is a creative way to get the kids involved, too. For this fall wreath, the kids can do all the tracing, cutting, choose the colors, and even do the gluing. It's a very simple felt wreath to make and one you can enjoy for many years to come. So, let's get crafting.

How to make a wreath for fall with felt leaves

The first step is to make the wreath form. Many times, I will use a foam wreath form, but for this project, I wanted to make my own wreath form from scraps of cardboard I had at home. You will need a large piece of cardboard and a large circle you can use to trace the wreath shape. I traced a large embroidery hoop for mine. You could trace a plate or platter.

Once you have traced the circle, you need to trace the inside line of the wreath. I made my cardboard wreath form about 2 inches wide. Wide enough that I have plenty of width to support the felt leaves when I glue them on. Use your scissors to cut out the wreath form. Set aside.

Now it's time to cut out the felt leaves. First up, you will need to print our fall felt leaf pattern sheet. I have created a printable fall template sheet that has three kinds of leaves and an acorn, too. Print this sheet and then cut out each leaf and acorn.

Use the pins to pin the template to the felt sheets. Then use the sharp scissors to cut around each fall leaf template. Keep cutting out leaves until you feel you have enough to cover your wreath. Place the leaves around the wreath form to test out how many leaves you need.

To cut out the acorns, you will need to cut out the full acorn shape from the lighter tone of brown felt. Once you've cut the full acorns, you can trim the top of the acorn shape and pin it to the darker brown felt sheets. Cut the acorn "hats" from the darker brown felt. Use the glue gun to adhere the acorn tops to the full acorns. This will give you the 3D acorn effect.

With all of your felt pieces cut out, it's time to build the fall felt wreath. Use your hot glue gun to adhere the leaves to the wreath form. Be sure to overlap the leaves. Turn some upside down and sideways. Think about how leaves look as they fall from the trees, they don't all face the same direction. When the leaves are in place, you can add the acorns. I made three little acorns for my wreath. You could totally make more. Cluster them together or spread them out around the wreath. It's up to you.

When the wreath is complete, decide what will be the top of your wreath, and then turn the wreath over and use the glue gun to add a loop of ribbon to the top of the wreath. This is how the wreath will hang.

Find the perfect spot to hang your fall felt leaf and enjoy it all season long. While I do hang a wreath on my front door, I also love hanging a wreath in spots around our house. It's so easy to use command hooks to pop a wreath anywhere on a wall or door. Especially because this wreath is so light. And, if your kid helps, why not hang this wreath on their bedroom door? How fun is that?
