Every Christmas, we would go to my grandparents for a Christmas party. They had all the best retro Christmas decorations. Of course, back then they weren't retro...they were the decorations you used. I can remember they had a super cute pom pom Christmas tree that they would place in the centre of the mantle. I loved that little Christmas tree, so fluffy and cute. I wanted to try and make my own.

How to Make a Pom Pom

You are going to make a big pile of green pom poms for this tree. I chose two shades of green yarn - a lighter tone and a darker tone. I always use my absolute favorite pom pom maker tool when I create any pom pom crafts. While there are many other DIY ways to make pom poms, I have found that this handy tool works the absolute best. I can work relatively quickly and make consistently sized pom poms.

To make a pom pom, I have created a video over on YouTube showing exactly how to make a pom pom, but here's an overview. Start by wrapping the yarn tightly around one side of the pom pom tool. Once wrapped, close that side of the tool

Then move to the second side of the tool, and wrap tightly. Once wrapped, close this side of the tool. You now have a fully wrapped pom pom maker, too.

Trim the yarn. And, trim all around the pom pom tool, cutting down the center channel of the tool. Be sure to keep the tool closed tightly as you cut around.

When you have cut all the way around, wrap a length of the same yarn into the channel of the tool. Tie at least two knots, as tightly as you can. This will secure your pom pom. When you've tied it off you can open the sides of the tool and you will have a pom pom. Trim it to get the exact shape that you like.

For this 6-inch-tall tree, you will need at least 40 1-inch pom poms. I made both dark and light green pom pom and then made some pom poms using both the light and dark green. To do this, just wrap the pom pom tool with both strands of yarn at the same time. When you have all of your pom poms made, it's time to build the tree.
How to Make a Pom Pom Christmas Tree

Now that you have your pom poms, it's time to start building the tree. Start with your foam cone base. I used a 6-inch tall, green foam cone. Use the hot glue gun to adhere the pom poms to the cone. Start at the bottom of the cone. I like to put a large dollop of glue on the cone and then press the pom pom onto the cone. Glue the pom poms all the way around the cone. Be sure to mix up the colors so you have a multidimensional tree.

Move up the tree one row at a time, until you reach the top of the tree. Keep stepping back and looking at the tree as you add the pom poms. You want to be sure you are getting a nice mix of colors and good coverage of the cone.

When the tree is completely covered, you can now add the extra details. I added few pre-made red and pink pom poms to the tree. They reminded me of little holly berries, or ornaments on the tree. I scattered the red and pink pom poms all over the tree. You could add mini-ornaments or mini-bells to the tree. Someone suggested that I add a star to the top, but I like the simplicity of my pom pom Christmas tree.

This tree will now sit front and center in our living room and remind me of those Christmas parties from the 70s and 80s. I love making holiday decorations that I can pass down to my kids and I know this Christmas tree will last for years to come.
