DIY Halloween Pom Pom Wreath

By Jen

Halloween is one of those holidays where you can have a lot of fun getting crafty. We've shared many Halloween crafts over the years, but I haven't made a Halloween wreath. I love a seasonal wreath and I love making pom pom crafts. So, for Halloween I wanted to make a super fun, reusable Halloween pom pom wreath and this one is all about the pom pom spiders and bats.

Honestly, I've never been a fan of scary Halloween stuff. When I was a kid I always dressed up as the silly Halloween characters. When I had kids I realized just how Halloween can be. Seriously, even walking my eldest to school during the daytime was traumatizing for her. And, she wouldn't go out trick or treating in the dark...too freaking scary. So, that's why this Halloween wreath is a fun wreath...filled with Halloween colors and bats and spiders, but they're on the more ridiculous side of Halloween.

black felt sheet
twigs
black acrylic craft paint
googly eyes
10-inch foam wreath
hot glue gun
hair pins/bobby pins
black ribbon

To begin with, you will need to make a big pile of pom poms in your favorite Halloween colors - I chose light purple, dark purple, and green. But, you could have fun with oranges, purples, and other tones of green. Use the pom pom making tool to create pom poms that are 1 inch and 3 inches in size if you've never made pom poms before be sure to check out my post and my YouTube video where I share how to use the pom pom tool. It's so easy and you can make a pile of pom poms in minutes.

Once you have your pom poms made it is time to adhere them to the wreath form. Use your hot glue gun to attach the pom poms. Work along the form, I like to only place pom poms on the front and sides of the form, so the wreath sits flat against the wall or door where you are hanging it. Vary the size of pom poms and the color in a pattern that you like. I always like a random pattern.

Next, you need to add a loop of ribbon to the top of the wreath, this is how you will hang the wreath. If you have a particular spot where you would like to hang the wreath, you may want to measure how long you need the loop to be. Glue the loop of ribbon in place.

How to make a pom pom bat

When you have covered the wreath form in pom poms and have added the loop, it's time to make the pom pom spider and bats. Make a few black pom poms in various sizes. I wanted the bat to be larger than the spider.

To make the bat wings, sketch a bat wing on a piece of paper. Place the large pom pom over the wing, to see if it is the right size for the body of the bat. Once you've determined the correct size of the wings, cut out the paper template and then cut out the wing in the black felt. Glue the wings to the back of the pom pom.

Finish the bats by gluing large googly eyes to the bat's "face". Set the bat aside and let's make the pom pom spider.

How to make a pom pom spider

Start by preparing the spider legs. I love making spider legs from thin twigs. They just seem like spider legs to me. Break off twigs so they fit the size of your pom pom spider body. Now, you could leave the legs natural or you can paint them with black paint, it's up to you. If you do paint the twigs be sure to let them dry before poking them into the pom pom body and using the hot glue gun to adhere them in place.

When the legs are in place you can add a set of googly eyes...I liked using a small pair of eyes for the spider.

Okay, now it's time to finish the wreath. Use the hair pins to attach the bats to the wreath - flying at the top of the wreath. I slid the hair pins over the wings and through the pom poms on the wreath. This makes the bat removable and repositionable. So you can change up the wreath next year, if you want.

braided black yarn with pom pom spider glued on

For the spider, glue a length of braided black yarn "spider web" to hang off the bottom of the wreath. This is where the spiders will hang. Again, glue the spider to the end of the webbing. You could add more spiders and more bats, it is totally up to you. I like the simplicity of one bat and one spider.

How to clean a pom pom wreath

People often ask what the best way to clean a pom pom wreath is. It is easier than you might think. Simply blow a hairdryer, the cool setting preferably, at the wreath. This will blow any dust out of the yarn. You can also use a sticky lint brush to remove any animal hairs.

How to store a pom pom wreath

I like to store my pom pom wreaths on hooks that are hanging on my craft room wall. I have a few long hooks that can hold a couple of wreaths. You can also store your wreaths in wreath storage bags. You can find these bags in various sizes and they even have handles. You can then keep your wreath clean and safe from damage when it isn't hung on your door.
