40 Years in...What I Know Today

By Jen

40 years ago I was born. 1974. Sounds like a million years ago...but it was only 40 years ago. I'm feeling a lot of pressure on this birthday. It feels like a significant day - that warrants some sort of significant action. I was thinking about writing down 40 goals for the year ahead...what a daunting task. I know myself pretty well and I'm more than certain I could not achieve 40 goals in 52 weeks...I would be setting myself up for failure. Then it dawned on me...I should write down everything I know about myself. 40 years and 40 things...I can totally do this. 40 years in birthday

I love to nap...I'm a napper

I truly love homemaking; sewing, cooking, baking and cleaning...really

I'm not afraid to cry

I believe that we all need help sometimes. It's okay to go to a psychologist, psychiatrist. It's okay to take psychotropic medications...it's okay.

I know some of the strongest people in the world

I know we all have secret struggles

I know the world's climate is changing (yep, I know this)

I hope I am teaching my children to be compassionate, empathetic, honest and confident

I hope I am being compassionate, empathetic, honest and confident

I know I have incredible in-laws

I know that I was a pain-in-the-ass teenager

I have a love/hate relationship with my hair

I think we need more trees and fewer parking lots

I love living in the city

Sometimes, I wish we lived in the country

I am amazed every single day, at how my children have grown

I hope my daughters find their passion and follow it wherever it leads

I regret nothing

I love being alone, peacefully alone

I know that I will miss my mom until the day I die

I fear dying young, like my mother

I hope to live to see 90, like my great-grandmother and my grandmother

I have a high pain tolerance

My favourite movie is "Stand By Me" and the list of my second favourite movie is too long to count

While I miss working outside of the home, I know I'm doing the most important work of my life, raising my kids

I cannot get enough of the Beatles

I'm a feminist

I'm a socialist

I do believe in fairies, I do, I do

I can see that the sky is blue, but if you don't, I'm okay with that

I have great friends...really great friends

I met the love of my life in high school

I prefer a long, hot shower, over a long, hot bath

My mother wasn't always right

My mother wasn't always wrong

I believe if a person wants to do it, if it doesn't hurt anyone else, if a person can do it, then a person should be able to do it....whatever "it" might be

I'll never eat veal or lamb, I'm not a vegetarian, but I don't want to eat a baby cow or sheep

I don't like seafood, unless it comes from a can and is mixed with a large dollop of mayo OR is fried and served with fries

I am happy with my life right now...in this moment

I love writing

My husband is my best friend and I am truly happy about that

I'm not sure I have accomplished everything I wanted to accomplish in my first 40 years...which is okay,
because it means I have so much more to do with the next 40 years

Thanks for reading...I'm off to bake myself a birthday apple pie...because I know I make a really kick ass apple pie! 40 years in birthday
