By Jen

You know we love creating and sharing free printable games for kids (and adults) to play. We've shared all kinds of different printable games for kids, for adults, for the classroom, and for fun. This time around we've pulled from all the familiar Thanksgiving related words to create our Thanksgiving word games.

Why play word games with kids?

Word games are great for kids because they help kids focus on sounds and letters, and develop skills they need for reading and writing. They are a fun way to introduce kids to simple vocabulary words, in this case, words we commonly associate with fall.

First up we have our Thanksgiving word search game. Print this game and give the child a highlighter that they can use to highlight the words when they find them. Don't forget to cross the words off the list as they find them. Word searches are a fun way to work with kids on letter recognition and help reinforce letter sounds. If you begin with this word search you will discover that the words in the list are repeated in the other word games. And, in case you need a little extra help finding the words in the game, here is our Thanksgiving word search answer sheet.

Next up is our Thanksgiving word jumble. A word jumble is a little more challenging than a word search. While the words are not provided, they definitely are familiar words we associate with the holiday. Print the Thanksgiving word jumble and let the kids work through unscrambling the letters. Again, I've also created a printable Thanksgiving word jumble answer sheet in case you are having a hard time unscrambling the words.

Finally, we have a Thanksgiving crossword puzzle. In this crossword puzzle kids will need to answer the questions to determine what the words are in the puzzle. The images on the crossword puzzle give a few hints to players. And, of course, I've created a Thanksgiving crossword puzzle answer key.

How to Play Thanksgiving Word Games

These games are great for the home classroom or a schoolroom. Depending on the age of the kids playing these games you can make them more challenging by using a timer. Give an allotted time to the kids to work through the word search and jumble. I love packing printable games in my car's glovebox and pulling them out when we are on long road trips. You know the drive to grandma's house is a whole lot more fun with a clipboard full of games to play. And, finally, why not print a copy for everyone who is attending your Thanksgiving dinner? Place a sheet and a pencil at each place setting. Right before dinner or maybe between dinner and dessert, you can play a little game.
