St. Patrick's Day Pom Pom Shamrock Garland

st patrick's day garland with pom poms and shamrocks pin image

I've made so many fun pom pom crafts, and I really wanted to make one for St. Patrick's Day. I love celebrating anything in the spring, I mean, the snow is melting, the flowers are peeking out of the soil, and the sun is feeling a little warmer. What's not to celebrate? This pom pom shamrock garland is a great St. Patrick's Day decoration to make.

To begin with, you will want to print the shamrock and 4-leaf clover templates. There are three clovers on each page. You will want to use green cardstock for this project. The cardstock is heavy enough to hold the pom pom in place.

Once printed, cut out the clovers. To cut out the middle circle, I started by making a small hole with a single hole punch. However, if you don't have a hole punch, you can always just poke your scissors into the center of the circle to cut it out. Print and cut out as many clover leaves as you need to make your garland.

When the clover is cut out, it's time to make a 1 ¾" pom pom for each shamrock and 4-leaf clover. I have created a video on YouTube, where I demonstrate how to make a pom pom using my favorite pom pom tool. While there are other ways to make pom poms, I love this handy tool. I can make pom poms quickly and with ease.

Start by cutting a 6-inch length of yarn for each pom pom. Begin by opening the pom pom tool and wrapping the yarn around one arched side of the tool. You will wrap until you've filled the arch with yarn. Then, close the wrapped side and start wrapping the other side of the tool. Close the second side when it is wrapped. And, trim the yarn.

Hold the wrapped pom pom tool tightly in one hand, and use a sharp pair of scissors to trim all the way around the tool. You are cutting down the middle channel of the tool.

When you've cut all the way around, feed the 6-inch length of yarn into the channel you've just cut and tie it as tight as you can. Do at least two knots.

Now, open the pom pom tool, and your pom pom will pop right off. Use your scissors to trim the pom pom into a nice ball shape.

Once you have a pile of green pom poms, I made light and dark green pom poms, gently press the pom poms through the center hole in the clover. Feed them through the hole, so half the pom pom is on each side. You won't need any glue to hold the pom pom in place. The hole should be tight enough to secure the pom pom.

To make a garland, I decided to add an orange pom pom between each clover leaf. So, I ended up making a pile of orange pom poms. Measure the space where you'd like your garland to hang, and then tie a small knot in one end of the green ribbon and attach a safety pin to the knot.

Feed the safety pin through the orange pom poms. Feed all of the orange pom poms onto the ribbon. My top tip for adding pom poms to a garland is to try to locate the centre string, which is wrapped around the pom pom. You want to feed the garland yarn through the centre of the pom pom. If you locate the centre string, you can feed the safety pin perpendicular to the string.

Then separate the pom poms, making space for the shamrocks and 4-leaf clovers. Attach the clover in place with a dollop of hot glue or a strip of tape. Be sure to glue on the backside, or the side with the template. This will hide the outline when you hang the garland.
