We are creeping ever closer to Halloween night. The kids have been busy making all kinds of Halloween craft projects. If your kids are anything like mine then they know what they want to dress up as already. The planning has begun. Our bucket of Halloween decorations is sitting on my living room floor. This week we decorate.

Another thing we do to prepare for Halloween is talk about safety. While Halloween night is a ton of fun, it's important to be safe as well. Here are a few tips for keeping kids safe on Halloween night. (Check out all the details of the great giveaway from Active Kids Club)
Halloween Night Safety Tips for Families
Safety Around Your House
Keep the Pathway Clear - When it comes to decorating your home be sure to keep a path clear for kids to approach your door. That path might be surrounded by tombstones and witches, but it should be free of things the kids could trip and fall down on.
Just Enough Light - Again, your entrance will be fully decked out with Halloween decorations but be sure to have enough light to get the kids to the candy bowl safely.
Safety Out Trick-or-Treating
Head Out Early - Let's face it, the kids will be super excited anyhow, so you might as well head out early. This one is age dependent, getting your little ones out early means things won't look as scary, the kids are more visible and when you get home the kids can help hand out candy to the older trick-or-treaters.
Stick to the Sidewalk - Halloween is a great time to have a conversation with the kids about street safety...stick to the sidewalks, cross at intersections, look both ways before crossing the street and don't walk between parked cars.
Keep the Car Parked - Keep the trick-or-treating local...stick close to home so there is no need to drive around. The fewer cars on the street the safer it is for everyone.
Face Paint Not Face Mask - Costume masks with tiny cut out eye holes can restrict a child's vision...face paint is an easy alternative.
Make sure costumes aren't restrictive - Watch out for clothing that might trip a child and be sure that a child can safely walk up and down stairs in their costume.
Keep kids visible - If possible, put kids is light coloured costumes. When that isn't possible, have kids carry a flashlight or glow sticks. Another way to keep the kids visible at night is to have them wear reflectors. Wearable reflectors can be found at bike shops, hardware stores and online. Just link them onto a child's loot bag, the back of their costume or wear the reflector as a necklace. These reflectors are great for any day of the week...but especially great for Halloween.
