4 Easy SPRING ZENTANGLE Patterns with printable spring umbrella and tulip templates

I love creating and sharing easy doodle patterns, and these spring zentangle patterns are inspired by everything I love about spring. It's always good to have an umbrella on hand on a spring day, so I've included an umbrella template and a spring flower template that you can use to fill with your spring zentangle designs.

What is Zentangle

Okay, what is a zentangle? Originally, I thought that a zentangle was just doodling…I was wrong. The zentangle method is a trademarked process based on a theory developed by founders Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas. You have undoubtedly seen this patterning art form before, it has become incredibly popular. “ZEN” means calm, and “TANGLE” means a collection of overlapping patterns. ZENTANGLE is the bringing together of the calm and the pattern. It was originally based on using a 3 ½ inch square of heavy stock paper and a black fine marker and various patterns that turn into a creative piece of art. We didn’t follow the exact Zentangle method, but we had a lot of fun experimenting.

Rain Cloud Zentangle Pattern

First up is the rain cloud pattern. Of course, there had to be a rain cloud pattern in a collection of spring zentangles. The first step was drawing the bottom, straight lined edge of the clouds. I wanted them to be scattered around. Then I added the fluffy cloud tops. Once the clouds were complete, it was time to add the raindrops. I filled the sky with raindrops. Finally, I added small dots of rain to turn the shower into a storm.

Caterpillar to Butterfly Pattern

Next up is the caterpillar to butterfly pattern. I loved bringing all the butterflies to life in this pattern. I started by creating a big butterfly. Made from circles and lines. Then I added a pile of crawling caterpillars all around the butterfly. The little legs and eyes brought a smile to my face.

Spring Flower Zentangle Pattern

This is more of a classic zentangle pattern. I started with drawing large and small-sized simple 4 and 5-petal flowers. Then I added arches to the petals radiating from the center of each petal outward. Once the flowers were filled with lines I then added more radiating lines around the flowers to fill all the empty space in the square.

Spring Tulip Doodle Pattern

Finally, I wanted to have fun with my favorite spring flower, the tulip. So, I doodled tulips and little flowers all around the space. Whenever I sit and doodle, I end up drawing some sort of little flower. So, this springy doodle design was a delight to draw.

Now that you've seen the patterns, you may be wondering where you can draw them. First of all, I have created a blank zentangle worksheet filled with empty squares where you can fill with your practice patterns.

I have also created two spring zentangle templates - a giant tulip and a large umbrella with falling raindrops. Each of these shapes can be printed and then filled with zentangle patterns and designs. All you need is an ultra-fine tipped black marker to bring your designs to life.

Why Make Zentangle Art?

Zentangle art is a wonderful way to unplug and be creative. There are no mistakes. This really is a doodle art form where there are no rules. Yes, I've created many easy patterns to try, but they are only suggestions and inspiration. You can truly make any design you like. And, putting on music and taking the time to sit and doodle is very calming. Time will pass and you will be creating something beautiful and peaceful. This is why I love to zentangle.
